Thrift Store Associate

Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey, Inc.
Bound Brook, NJ | Full-Time (Hourly)

Position Overview

Join a mission-driven organization where your work creates meaningful opportunities for individuals and communities. The Thrift Store Associate is a fast-paced, production-focused role responsible for receiving, processing, and preparing donated goods for sale.

This position plays a critical role in maximizing the value of donations through efficient sorting, pricing, and merchandising. Success in this role requires strong attention to detail, the ability to work in a high-volume environment, and a commitment to safety and quality standards.


Key Responsibilities

Donation Processing & Production

  • Sort, grade, and inspect donations (textiles, housewares, electronics, shoes, and accessories) according to quality and condition standards
  • Tag and price merchandise accurately while meeting established production and hourly performance goals
  • Prepare items on rolling racks and carts for efficient movement to the sales floor
  • Ensure racks and fixtures are full, organized, and aligned with store merchandising standards


Merchandise Flow & Organization

  • Identify and separate items for e-commerce, specialty, and clearance channels
  • Accurately label and route merchandise to the appropriate departments
  • Maintain an organized stockroom and processing area to support efficient operations


Customer & Donor Engagement

  • Deliver friendly, respectful, and efficient service to customers and donors
  • Assist with donation intake, including unloading donated goods, issuing receipts, and maintaining a clean donation area
  • Represent Goodwill’s mission and values through positive and professional interactions


Safety & Operational Standards

  • Follow all safety procedures and operational guidelines to maintain a clean, safe, and organized workspace
  • Properly handle pre-owned items using appropriate protective equipment provided by Goodwill
  • Report any safety concerns, hazards, or incidents to management promptly


Team Contribution

  • Collaborate with team members to achieve daily production and store goals
  • Support additional store functions and perform other duties as assigned


Qualifications & Requirements

Required

  • Ability to perform physical tasks throughout the shift, including standing, bending, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume production environment
  • Strong reliability, work ethic, and attention to detail
  • Basic communication skills and ability to work collaboratively


Preferred

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Prior experience in retail, customer service, warehouse operations, or donation processing environments


Schedule

  • Full-time position requiring weekday and weekend availability
  • Flexible scheduling needed to support operations Monday through Sunday, 7:00 AM – 9:00 PM


Work Environment & Safety

This role involves handling pre-owned merchandise, which may include exposure to dust, allergens, or other materials. Goodwill provides training, safety protocols, and protective equipment to maintain a safe and healthy work environment. Employees are expected to follow all safety guidelines at all times.
