What is a GitHub Engineer?

A GitHub Engineer is a software professional who specializes in using GitHub, a popular platform for version control and collaboration, to manage code, streamline development workflows, and support software engineering teams. Their responsibilities often include setting up repositories, managing branches, automating workflows with GitHub Actions, and ensuring code quality through pull requests and code reviews. They may also help teams adopt best practices in source control and integrate GitHub with other tools in the development pipeline. This role requires strong knowledge of Git, continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD), and collaborative software development.

How does a GitHub Engineer typically collaborate with development teams to streamline code integration and deployment?

GitHub Engineers work closely with development teams to design and optimize continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, ensuring efficient code reviews, automated testing, and seamless merging of code. They often set best practices for branching strategies, manage repository permissions, and help troubleshoot integration issues. Regular collaboration involves participating in sprint planning, code review sessions, and providing technical guidance on using GitHub features effectively. This role is highly cross-functional, requiring strong communication skills and a proactive approach to supporting developers in maintaining code quality and delivery speed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Github Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Github Engineer, you need a solid background in software development, version control systems (especially Git), and collaborative coding practices, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with Github workflows, APIs, CI/CD tools, and scripting languages is typically required, along with certifications like GitHub Certified Developer being advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating across diverse development teams. These skills ensure seamless code collaboration, efficient project management, and the delivery of high-quality software in dynamic environments.

Job description

Sharpen is hiring a Platform Engineer to help scale and evolve the core infrastructure that powers our cloud-native SaaS platform. You'll work closely with our Platform Engineering Lead and other engineering teams to design, build, and maintain the systems, tools, and workflows that make our product development fast, reliable, and secure.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives in an environment where automation, observability, and DevOps culture are core values and who wants to grow into a technical leadership path over time.
What You'll Do
• Help design, build, and maintain our AWS-based infrastructure using IaC tools like AWS CDK or Terraform
• Build internal tooling and developer experience improvements to reduce friction across engineering
• Contribute to our observability and incident response strategy (Grafana, OpenTelemetry, etc.)
• Participate in on-call rotations and help us refine our operational excellence practices
• Collaborate with developers, QA, and security to ensure our infrastructure is stable, compliant, and cost-efficient
• Support the adoption of DevOps best practices and participate in architectural discussions for new services
What We're Looking For
• 1+ years of experience as a platform, infrastructure, or DevOps engineer
• Hands-on experience with AWS and infrastructure-as-code tools (CDK, Terraform, CloudFormation, etc.)
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, CircleCI, etc.)
• Familiarity with monitoring, logging, and tracing tools like Grafana or OpenTelemetry
• Comfortable working with containerized applications in ECS, EKS, or similar environments
• Solid scripting or programming experience in languages like TypeScript, Go, Python, or Bash
• A bias for automation and a mindset of continual improvement
• Experience using AI to automate and streamline workflows
Nice to Have
• Experience supporting multi-tenant SaaS platforms
• Exposure to security/compliance frameworks like SOC 2 or PCI
• Experience working in teams that own their infrastructure and participate in on-call
• Familiarity with SIP, VoIP systems, or real-time communication infrastructure
Why Join Sharpen?
We're not your typical tech company-we're collaborative, curious, and constantly pushing to improve how contact centers operate. If you're ready to grow with a mission-driven team and make an impact on how companies connect with their customers, Sharpen is the place for you!
• Competitive salary + commission and performance bonuses
• Full benefits package (health, dental, vision, 401k)
• 401k match and employer HSA contribution
