Functional Project Manager information

What is a functional project manager?

Functional Project Managers are professionals who oversee projects within a specific business function, such as IT, finance, or human resources. They are responsible for planning, executing, and finalizing projects according to deadlines and within budget, while ensuring that the project aligns with the goals of their functional area. Unlike general project managers, they often have specialized knowledge in the area they manage, allowing them to coordinate effectively with both project teams and department stakeholders. Their role typically includes resource allocation, risk management, and communication between technical and non-technical teams.

How does a functional project manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project lifecycle?

A Functional Project Manager plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between different departments, such as IT, operations, and business units, throughout a project. They facilitate communication, align goals, and ensure that all stakeholders are informed about project progress and changes. Collaboration often involves leading regular meetings, managing expectations, and resolving conflicts to keep the project on track. This role requires balancing technical requirements with business objectives, making strong interpersonal and organizational skills essential for success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a functional project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Functional Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, business process knowledge, and usually a relevant degree or certification such as PMP or PRINCE2. Familiarity with project management software (like MS Project or Jira), workflow tools, and enterprise systems (such as SAP or Oracle) is essential. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help drive cross-functional teams and manage stakeholder expectations. These skills and qualities ensure that projects are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with business objectives.

Job description

About Axelor

Axelor is a global leader in open-source enterprise software, delivering an all-in-one platform that seamlessly integrates ERP, CRM, and Business Process Management (BPM). Built on a modern, low-code architecture, our solution empowers organizations to customize, automate, and scale their business operations with unmatched flexibility and transparency.

As we expand our international footprint, we are seeking an ambitious, client-focused Project Manager to join our team in Toronto and drive high-impact software deployments across North America.

The Role

As Project Manager, you will lead end-to-end software implementations, taking ownership of customer engagements from initial scoping to final delivery. Following an intensive onboarding program on our platform and technology ecosystem, you will serve as the strategic liaison between our clients and internal engineering, functional, and sales teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Discovery & Scoping: Lead functional discovery sessions, analyze complex client workflows, and define detailed functional/technical specifications.
  • Project Delivery & Governance: Build project plans, establish scope baselines, manage delivery schedules, and track key milestones across the project lifecycle.
  • Risk & Change Management: Proactively identify project bottlenecks, manage scope changes, build risk mitigation plans, and realign resources to keep deployments on schedule.
  • Cross-Functional Leadership: Partner closely with Sales, Solutions Architects, and Developers to ensure technical alignment, quality deliverables, and seamless client handoffs.
  • Client Advocacy: Maintain clear project communication, lead recurring steering committee reviews, and foster strong, long-term relationships with key customer stakeholders.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience: 3–5+ years of project management experience leading complex B2B enterprise software deployments (ERP, CRM, or BPM platforms strongly preferred).
  • Technical Aptitude: Comfort navigating modular software architectures, enterprise data workflows, and dynamic software integration projects.
  • Methodologies: Strong command of Agile/Scrum and Waterfall delivery frameworks; experience managing time-and-materials or fixed-fee projects.
  • Communication: Exceptional verbal, written, and presentation skillsβ€”able to translate complex technical concepts into clear business value for executive stakeholders.
  • Language: Professional fluency in English is required; fluency in French is a strong asset given our international teams.

What We Offer

  • Growth: Opportunity to shape Axelor's growing North American presence within a high-growth tech environment.
  • Impact: Direct influence over platform implementation strategies for mid-market and enterprise clients.
  • Culture: Collaborative, transparent work culture with flexible working arrangements in Toronto.
