What Does a Remote Senior Project Manager Do?

As a remote senior project manager, you work from home to manage a project for a company or organization. This involves planning the project, ensuring all employees meet each deadline, and helping lead the development of the project. In this role, you often help determine the scope of the project, make decisions about what types of employees to hire, and manage the project's budget. This is a relatively unusual position, but it has become more popular in recent years as other employees have started to work from home as well. As the name suggests, this is a senior position that is usually only available to applicants who have many years of experience managing projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Senior Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Senior Project Manager, you need expertise in project management methodologies, strong organizational skills, and a proven track record in managing complex projects, often supported by a bachelor's degree and certifications like PMP or PRINCE2. Familiarity with project management tools such as Asana, Jira, or Microsoft Project, as well as remote collaboration platforms like Slack or Zoom, is crucial. Outstanding communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities are soft skills that set top performers apart in this role. These skills are essential for successfully leading distributed teams, ensuring timely project delivery, and maintaining alignment across stakeholders in a virtual environment.

How do Remote Senior Project Managers effectively build and maintain team cohesion across distributed teams?

Remote Senior Project Managers often lead teams spread across different locations and time zones, which can make fostering a strong team dynamic challenging. They typically use regular video conferences, collaborative project management tools, and clear communication protocols to ensure everyone stays aligned and connected. By proactively encouraging open communication, organizing virtual team-building activities, and setting clear expectations, they help maintain trust and motivation within the team. This approach not only supports project success but also cultivates a positive and collaborative remote work environment.

What are Remote Senior Project Managers?

Remote Senior Project Managers are experienced professionals responsible for leading and overseeing projects from a remote location. They coordinate teams, manage budgets and timelines, and ensure project goals are met, all while working outside of a traditional office environment. Their role requires strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills, as they often work with cross-functional teams spread across different locations. Remote Senior Project Managers use digital tools to manage tasks, track progress, and facilitate collaboration. They are vital in organizations that support distributed or hybrid work models.

Job description

Who are we looking for?

GHD is seeking a Senior Project Manager / Project Director to lead GHD's involvement in large-scale mine remediation projects, delivered under long-term federal and publicsector programs with complex governance, multiple work packages, and extended execution horizons.

This role is intended to be dedicated to major remediation programs, with primary accountability for proposal leadership, early delivery planning, and execution readiness, and the potential to transition into execution-phase leadership as projects are awarded.

The position suits a senior PM with experience in remote or complex remediation, mining, or infrastructure projects, strong interface management with construction partners, and the ability to operate effectively in owner-led, compliance-heavy delivery environments.

Role Purpose

The Senior Project Manager / Project Director will have overall accountability for leading GHD's project management role on mine remediation projects, including:

  • Leading EOIs, RFQs, and RFPs for major remediation work packages
  • Managing GHD's interfaces with construction partners and owners
  • Establishing project controls, governance, and delivery structures suitable for long-term remediation programs
  • Coordinating multidisciplinary technical inputs aligned with GHD's scope of services

Your Main Responsibilities Will Include

Project and Program leadership

  • Act as GHD's Senior Project Manager / Project Director for mine remediation bids and awarded packages
  • Lead multiple concurrent bid packages and delivery planning activities across rolling procurement schedules
  • Establish and manage project governance, scope, schedule, cost, risk, and change management frameworks
  • Provide a single point of accountability for GHD delivery across all assigned remediation projects

Owner & Construction Partner Interface Management

  • Serve as primary interface between GHD, owners, and construction partners, ensuring alignment on strategy, scope, resourcing, and delivery approach
  • Support owners through federal or public-sector oversight, reporting, and compliance requirements
  • Manage coordination across multiple stakeholders in complex environments
  • Maintain clear communication pathways and issue resolution mechanisms across all parties

Scope & Technical Integration Oversight

Provide integrated leadership across GHD's typical remediation scopes, including:

  • Engineering for utilities and infrastructure (civil works, water management, power supply, tailings, environmental design)
  • Environmental compliance, monitoring, and reporting
  • Health and industrial hygiene management
  • Quality management related to contaminated materials and remediation activities
  • Project management, controls, cost, and scheduling for GHD's scope

Leadership & Team Development

  • Mentor and support project managers, engineers, and junior staff.
  • Contribute to building and strengthening delivery capability.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and highperformance project culture.
  • Uphold GHD's commitment to health, safety, quality, and environmental performance.

What You Bring to the Team

Experience & Technical Background

  • 12+ years of experience delivering large infrastructure, remediation, or mining,
  • Demonstrated experience with remote, northern, or logistically complex projects
  • Strong understanding of owner-led delivery models, compliance obligations, and public accountability
  • Experience working alongside construction-focused partners where consulting, engineering, and construction roles are clearly differentiated
  • Experience working with and engaging with First Nations on complex projects, both as partners and subcontractors within the team

Project Leadership Skills

  • Proven ability to lead multi-package, multi-stakeholder programs
  • Strong project controls mindset: scope integration, cost, schedule, risk, and reporting
  • Ability to operate effectively in ambiguous, evolving project environments
  • Strong client-facing, partner-facing, and executive communication skills

Professional Qualifications

  • Degree in Engineering or related discipline
  • Professional engineering designation preferred.
  • Experience in environmental remediation, contaminated land, or mine closure

What We Expect From You

  • Lead the successful delivery of remediation and closure projects from development through execution.
  • Provide sound project and technical oversight during design, procurement, and construction phases.
  • Deliver high-confidence, execution-ready leadership on major mine remediation programs
  • Position GHD as a trusted, outcome-focused advisor to owners and partners
  • Build scalable delivery structures capable of supporting long-term program work
  • Uphold GHD's standards for safety, quality, environmental performance, and Indigenous engagement
