Job description

Brooklyn Heights Montessori School offers a challenging and comprehensive curriculum built on the philosophy of Maria Montessori to children aged two years through eighth grade. Students work and learn in mixed-age classes led by teaching teams of thoughtful and well-trained professionals. The students have exposure to a full range of academic and artistic courses. BHMS also offers an after school program and a summer day camp. The School is housed in a beautiful facility in the Cobble Hill section of Brooklyn and is ideally located for convenient access to all parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Job Title: Grade 6-Middle School Music Teacher
Start Date: Late August 2026
Reports to: Head of Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA)
Brief Description: The Grade 6-Middle School Music Teacher is a full-time, 10-month position. The Grade 6-Middle School Music Teacher works as part of the Visual and Performing Arts Team (VAPA) and in collaboration with the EC-Grade 5 Music Teacher, Drama Teacher, Art Teacher, Culinary Arts Teacher, STEAM Teacher, and Head of VAPA.
Responsibilities:
  • Provide a high standard of care and teaching to students during school hours, including vigilance around both safety and learning
  • Teach foundational music rhythmic and melodic skills; teach a wide range of music techniques, genres, vocal coaching, variety of instruments, composition, and improvisation
  • Review curriculum, teach, and prepare lessons in collaboration with the VAPA team for Grade 6 and Middle School students
  • Design and teach Selectives classes for 6th-8th graders
  • Serve as the music director for a yearlong Middle School Collaborative Production (play or musical)
  • Prepare, rehearse, and co-lead with the EC-Grade 5 Music Teacher winter and spring all-school music assemblies and Grade 6-Middle School presentations
  • Maintain student records with regard to attendance, achievement, and Conference and reports
  • Maintain a "prepared" environment in the classroom and other areas used for instruction
  • Attend and participate in school-wide evening meetings, such as Back-to-School Night, Parent Education, Community events, and others
  • Attend and participate in VAPA, MCP, Faculty, and Staff, and program meetings as indicated on the school calendar
  • Establish and maintain a positive and professional relationship with students, parents, and other teachers and school personnel
  • Be in attendance at school in accordance with the times set forth in the letter of agreement
  • Prepare annual statement of goals and objectives for professional development and evaluation
  • Comply with the established policies and procedures of Brooklyn Heights Montessori School as stated in the Faculty & Staff Handbook
  • Model as fully as possible the values in the Brooklyn Heights Montessori School Mission Statement, Diversity Statement, and Community Norms
  • Perform various reasonable tasks from time to time as requested by the Head of VAPA, the Head of Elementary Programs, the Assistant Head of School, or Head of School

Skills and Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Master's Degree preferred
  • Advanced Certification in Music preferred
  • Experience with music and sound tech preferred
  • Experience with preparing musicals preferred
  • Three years of teaching experience minimum

Salary is $61,500 - 68,250, commensurate with experience, qualifications and aligned with the school's salary scale.
