How much do full time medical coder trainee jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 5, 2026, the average hourly pay for full time medical coder trainee in the United States is $22.42, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.03 and $24.04 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Can you get a job as a medical coder with no experience?

Full-time medical coder trainees can often find entry-level positions even without prior experience, as training programs and certifications like CPC or CCS prepare candidates for the role. Employers may prioritize relevant skills, such as attention to detail and knowledge of medical terminology, along with completing a coding certification. Gaining hands-on experience through internships or training programs can improve job prospects in this field.

What pays more, CCS or CPC?

For a full-time medical coder trainee, CPC (Certified Professional Coder) certification generally leads to higher pay compared to CCS (Certified Coding Specialist), as CPC is more widely recognized in outpatient and physician billing environments. However, salaries can vary based on experience, location, and employer, with CPC-certified coders often earning more due to broader job opportunities and demand for outpatient coding skills.

Will AI eventually replace medical coders?

AI technology is increasingly used to assist medical coders by automating routine coding tasks and improving accuracy. However, full replacement is unlikely in the near future, as medical coders' expertise is needed for complex cases, quality assurance, and interpreting nuanced clinical information. Medical coding remains a role that benefits from human oversight and ongoing training in coding standards and tools.

How long is training for a medical coder?

Training for a full-time medical coder typically lasts from a few months to a year, depending on the program and prior experience. Many coders complete certification courses in coding and medical terminology, which can be done through online or in-person classes, and some employers offer on-the-job training. Certification such as CPC (Certified Professional Coder) is often required or preferred for employment.
