Science Librarian
12-month, full-time position, P&A Professional position.
The person in this position provides library liaison services to assigned departments, programs, and research institutes in the sciences. This person also provides support and outreach for research data management at UMD in collaboration with UMD library colleagues and University Libraries colleagues in the Twin Cities.
For assigned departments and programs, this librarian provides specialized reference services, selects information resources, creates learning objects, serves as a liaison to faculty, and provides information literacy instruction for classes. As part of the Research & Learning Team, this person will share responsibility for delivering information literacy instruction for courses within the College and Advanced Writing Program. The person in this position participates in Research & Learning Team meetings, activities, and projects, serves on teams and groups working on library-wide initiatives, and contributes to the library profession and/or campus.
Assigned departments/programs: Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences, and Physics; UMD research institutes, including Large Lakes Observatory, Minnesota Sea Grant College Program, and Natural Resources Research Institute
Essential Job Functions
Liaison Assignments (50%)
For assigned departments and programs:
  • Provide in-depth research support in assigned subject areas
  • Provide information literacy instruction for courses in subject areas and for Advanced Writing classes related to the assigned subject area
  • Develop good working relationships with faculty to support teaching and research
  • Keep current on academic trends and changes
  • Create and update course and research guides
  • Assess user needs to develop and maintain relevant, high quality services and information resources
  • Develop expertise in specialized information resources relevant to liaison areas
  • Inform library users from liaison areas about relevant changes to library electronic resources
  • Contribute to decision making about resource renewals and cancellations
  • Promote electronic and other information resources
  • Develop and manage library resources and collections relevant to assigned liaison areas. This includes special and ongoing weeding projects
  • Manage assigned acquisitions budgets and provide input on budget decisions

Additional Assignments (20%)
  • In partnership with library colleagues at UMD and the Twin Cities, coordinate library outreach and education efforts on research data management
  • Develop, maintain, and share knowledge of research data management best practices
  • In consultation with the Digitization and Metadata Specialist and the Publishing and Authorship Librarian, foster relationships across campus to build awareness of and increase contributions to the Data Repository for U of M (DRUM)
  • In collaboration with liaison librarians, provide consultation-level research support for evidence synthesis authors at UMD

General Responsibilities as a Member of the Research & Learning Team (20%)
  • Provide general research support to library users during scheduled hours
  • Provide foundational information literacy instruction to classes in College Writing and College in the Schools
  • Assist students and other researchers in evaluating resources and refining topics for research
  • Keep current on professional issues related to research help services
  • Share information on resources and research skills with colleagues
  • Document data on research transactions and instruction sessions
  • Serve as a member of the Research & Learning Team and participate in team meetings
  • Participate in team events and initiatives
  • Work cooperatively with library staff

Library-Related Professional Service and Engagement (10%)
  • Attend library, UMD, and community meetings and events
  • Serve on University committees, boards, or projects
  • Engage in professional development
  • Contribute to the profession through organizational work, presenting at conferences, or publishing

Other Duties as Assigned
Qualifications
Required:
  • ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent combination of advanced degree and relevant experience
  • Excellent organizational and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience with proposing and/or implementing actions that improve equity and inclusion in your work
  • Demonstrated experience building collaborative relationships with colleagues, library users, and/or community partners

Preferred:
  • Demonstrated experience designing and/or delivering information literacy instruction
  • Demonstrated experience providing liaison services in an academic environment
  • Demonstrated experience providing reference service in a library
  • Demonstrated experience or coursework with research data management
  • Degree or significant library-related experience in a subject area related to liaison assignments
