Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Health's Office of Licensure and Certification is seeking knowledgeable, detail-oriented professionals to serve as Medical Facilities Inspectors within the Long-Term Care Division in the Tidewater Region.
This position currently offers a sign-on bonus of $5,000 and 40 hours of front-loaded annual leave time with a one-year written agreement for external candidates.
This position is open until filled. Initial applications received by July 29, 2026 will be reviewed first. If no qualified candidates are selected, a second review of applications received after that date will be conducted.
In this role, you will conduct state and federal surveys of nursing facilities and other long-term care providers to determine compliance with healthcare regulations and standards. Your work will directly support resident safety, dignity, rights, and quality of care.
As a Medical Facilities Inspector, you will conduct on-site surveys and inspections of nursing facilities and other long-term care providers to evaluate compliance with state and federal requirements. You will investigate complaints, incidents, allegations of abuse and neglect, misappropriation of resident property, and Immediate Jeopardy situations. Your work will include reviewing medical records, care plans, staffing documentation, medication administration practices, facility policies, and operational systems; interviewing residents, family members, and facility staff; and observing resident care, dining services, infection-control practices, and overall facility operations. You will identify deficient practices, determine the appropriate scope and severity, prepare clear and legally defensible Statements of Deficiencies, review plans of correction, participate in revisit surveys and monitoring activities, and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of healthcare and regulatory professionals.
What to expect?
• This is a mobile position.
• Frequent statewide travel, including overnight travel, is required.
• Extended work hours may occasionally be required during active investigations or Immediate Jeopardy situations.
• The selected candidate must obtain Surveyor Minimum Qualifications Test certification within 12 months of employment.
• Medical clearance for respiratory fit testing must be obtained within 90 days of employment and annually thereafter.
The Virginia Department of Health offers 12 paid holidays, medical, dental, vision and life insurance, retirement plans (including 401a Cash Match and 457 Deferred Compensation Plan) as well as sick, family/personal, and annual leave.
Minimum Qualifications
• Self-directed individual with specialized knowledge of health care systems and services, quality of care issues & health care administration
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
• Ability to communicate orally and in writing in a clear, concise, and legally defensible manner; ability to manage multiple assignments independently; to listen actively, share job knowledge, maintain professionalism, and follow through with requests
• Ability to independently assess individual patient/resident medical care plans and outcomes, the overall quality of facility care and services, and to interpret and apply complex state/federal regulations to the findings
• If working in LTC and/or Complaint unit, must obtain SMQT Certification within 12 months of hire date. All MFIs must obtain medical clearance for fit testing in accordance with OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard (29 CFR 1910.134) [Ref.2] regulations within 90 days of hire date and annually with exception to Complaint Unit.
Additional Considerations
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor. May be required by VDH to adjust work hours, location, and job duties and participate in training to meet public health business needs, including emergencies. If this position is designated as a mobile worker, this includes both working in the field and teleworking at an alternate location when not in the field or during an emergency closing. You may be required to periodically come into your assigned office to attend meetings or training
