Job description

Jeopardy!, America's favorite quiz show, has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! The show is looking for a talented writer to join its Emmy award-winning WGA writing team. The ideal candidate will demonstrate wit and clarity by formulating clues using the show's unique answer-and-question format. This individual will also exemplify excellent research skills and creativity throughout their work.


Please carefully review the details of the position and the application submission requirements below.


Key responsibilities:

  • Write an average of 8 categories per week

  • Source material to show standards (no Wikipedia, no AI)

  • Contribute to writers' meetings with constructive feedback on game material

  • Work hand-in-glove with the research staff and rewrite clues as needed based on feedback from researchers

  • Write test material when needed

  • Assist on tape days with last-minute replacement clues

  • Provide rapid-response research on tape days to help with on-stage judging during game play

This is a full-time production position, hired and paid through Entertainment Partners.

Required Qualifications:

  • 4-year college degree

  • Exceptional communication, grammar and writing skills

  • Ability to collaborate with all areas of production

Preferred Qualifications:

  • WGA membership

  • Familiarity with FileMaker Pro

STEP 2: Submit writing sample as follows:

a) Write 6 categories for the Jeopardy! round and 6 categories for Double Jeopardy! - those 12 categories should have 5 clues each.

b) Write one category from each of the following 12 topics. These are general topics, but the exact title of the category should be developed on your own, using your creativity:

  • History
  • Geography
  • Literature
  • Science
  • Art/Music/Opera/Ballet
  • Current Trends (lifestyles, but not necessarily pop culture)
  • Food or Business
  • Potpourri
  • Starts With (you choose letter or word)
  • Wordplay TBD
  • Famous People (pop culture mainly but not necessarily all)
  • Pop culture TBD

c) Write 3 Final Jeopardy!'s of your choice - category and clue

*Note: Every clue must be accompanied by at least one source for every fact.*

STEP 3: Print, review and sign the writing sample release doc: Writing Sample Release. Scan or save your signed document as a file and attach it in your email submission.


STEP 4: Provide a cover letter & resume in your email submission.

Steps 2-4 must be submitted together and sent to: Jeopardywriter_applications@spe.sony.com. The submission deadline is July 10th. As a reminder, you must complete all steps thoroughly, or you will not be considered for the position.

The anticipated base salary for this position is $138,000 to $172,000. This role may also qualify for annual incentive and/or comprehensive benefits. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location of the position.
