What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Time Engineering Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Engineering Manager, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management, and team leadership, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and professional experience. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), version control systems (such as Git), and possibly certifications such as PMP or Agile/Scrum are commonly required. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and mentorship abilities help foster team cohesion and drive productivity. These skills are vital for delivering quality technical solutions, managing complex projects, and developing high-performing engineering teams.

What are some typical challenges Full Time Engineering Managers face when leading technical teams?

Full Time Engineering Managers often encounter challenges such as balancing technical leadership with people management, aligning team goals with broader business objectives, and ensuring effective communication across cross-functional teams. They are responsible for removing obstacles that hinder team productivity, supporting the professional development of individual engineers, and managing project timelines and deliverables. Navigating these challenges requires strong interpersonal skills, technical expertise, and the ability to adapt to rapidly changing project requirements.

What are Full Time Engineering Managers?

Full Time Engineering Managers are professionals responsible for leading and managing engineering teams within an organization on a full-time basis. They oversee project planning, team coordination, and the technical direction of engineering projects. In addition to managing people, they often work closely with other departments to ensure that products and solutions meet organizational goals. Job description

As a Senior Engineering Manager - Data Store Platforms, you will lead the Data Store team, responsible for building and enabling scalable, secure, and reliable data platform services across the enterprise. You will guide two squads-Platform Services and Service Enablement-to deliver self-service data capabilities that application teams can adopt and operate confidently. This role combines technical strategy, people leadership, and operational excellence to accelerate delivery and strengthen production reliability. The specific work arrangements vary by role and team, and the recruiter or hiring manager will provide additional details during the hiring process.
What you'll do

  • Deliver scalable, secure, and self-service data services that support internal engineering teams.
  • Guide technical design, architecture patterns, and engineering standards for platform services.

  • Partner with operations teams to ensure reliability, scalability, and operational readiness.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align platform capabilities with engineering needs
  • Coach and develop engineers through feedback, career growth, and performance management.

Basic qualifications
  • 7 years of software or platform engineering experience, including 2 years leading an engineering team
  • 5 years of experience building and operating AWS-based data platforms, including Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL, Amazon ElastiCache, or Amazon DocumentDB
  • 3+ years of experience guiding technical design, architecture, or engineering standards for distributed systems or data platforms
  • 2 years of leadership experience, including coaching engineers and delivering team outcomes
  • Experience delivering shared platform or infrastructure services used by internal engineering teams

Preferred qualifications
  • 5 years of experience building self-service platforms with automation and standardized service offerings
  • 3 years of experience improving developer experience through onboarding, documentation, or training
  • 3 years of experience supporting production systems, including reliability or incident response practices
  • 3 years of experience using metrics to improve platform performance, adoption, or efficiency
  • Experience working with AWS NoSQL and distributed database technologies such as Amazon DynamoDB or Amazon Keyspaces
