Job Type: Full-Time
Salary: Competitive, Based on Experience (+ Performance-Based Bonus Potential)
About Thompson Concrete
At Thompson Concrete, we will become the nationally preferred concrete and excavation provider by honoring our commitments, building strong relationships, and delivering excellence. Our mission is to empower our team to create the best possible experience for clients, communities, and families.
We are proud to be an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) company, meaning our employees are also company owners. This structure fosters a collaborative culture where every team member has a stake in our success, driving innovation, accountability, and long-term growth.
We are seeking an experienced Estimator who is detail-oriented, analytical, and proactive in client engagement. This role will support our commercial, industrial, and multi-family concrete construction projects by providing accurate and competitive estimates while collaborating with general contractors, vendors, and internal teams.
Position Summary
The Estimator will be responsible for developing accurate cost estimates for commercial concrete projects, including site concrete, structural concrete, and excavation. This role involves thorough plan review, quantity takeoffs, cost analysis, and pricing strategies. The ideal candidate will have strong technical knowledge of concrete construction, excellent communication skills, and the ability to foster relationships with GCs, subcontractors, and suppliers.
Key Responsibilities
Preconstruction & Estimating
  • Perform accurate quantity takeoffs for excavation, backfill, footings, slabs, piers, walls, and site concrete.
  • Develop detailed cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor work.
  • Analyze project plans, specifications, and bid documents to ensure a complete scope of work.
  • Collaborate with project managers and field teams to ensure a smooth transition from estimating to execution.
  • Identify value engineering opportunities to optimize project costs while maintaining quality.
  • Prepare and submit bid forms, proposals, cost breakdowns, and alternative pricing options.
  • Maintain relationships with subcontractors and suppliers to obtain competitive pricing.
  • Stay informed on market trends, labor costs, and material pricing.

Client & Business Development Engagement
  • Serve as a key point of contact for clients, general contractors, and trade partners during the bid process.
  • Actively participate in pre-bid meetings and site visits to assess project conditions and challenges.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with GCs, owners, and developers to secure new opportunities.
  • Confidently present estimates and project proposals to internal teams and clients.
  • Support business development efforts by providing market insights and competitor analysis.

Technology & Process Improvement
  • Utilize estimating and bid management software (e.g., ProContractor, On-Screen Takeoff, Bluebeam, BuildingConnected).
  • Implement best practices for bid tracking, historical cost analysis, and process efficiency.
  • Support the integration of new technology and data-driven estimating strategies.

Qualifications & Requirements
Required:
  • Experience in concrete estimating (commercial, industrial, multi-family preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of concrete construction, formwork systems, and reinforcing techniques.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Bluebeam, and estimating software (ProContractor, On-Screen Takeoff, or similar).
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Strong mathematical skills, attention to detail, and analytical thinking.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills for subcontractor and supplier coordination.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to visit project sites.

Preferred:
  • Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with scheduling software (Primavera P6, MS Project) and bid platforms (BuildingConnected, SmartBid).
  • Certification in Estimating or Preconstruction (CPE, LEED AP) is a plus.
  • Prior experience in a business development or client-facing role is beneficial.

Work Environment & Benefits
  • Work schedule: 50-hour workweek, with occasional site visits.
  • Office & Field Exposure: Combination of office-based estimating and field site visits.
  • ESOP Ownership: As an employee-owned company, you have a vested interest in the company's success.
  • Team-Oriented Culture: Collaborative environment with career development opportunities.
  • Competitive Compensation: Salary + Performance-Based Bonus Potential.
  • Benefits: Health insurance, 401(k), PTO, ESOP retirement benefits, and professional development support.

Why Join Thompson Concrete?
  • Be part of a fast-growing, nationally recognized concrete contractor.
  • Employee Ownership - As an ESOP company, you share in the company's financial success.
  • Career advancement opportunities within estimating, preconstruction, or project management.
  • Work in a supportive and dynamic team environment.
