What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Hourly Concrete Contractor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Hourly Concrete Contractor, you need expertise in concrete mixing, pouring, finishing, and the ability to read construction blueprints, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent and relevant on-the-job training. Familiarity with tools like screeds, trowels, concrete mixers, and knowledge of OSHA safety standards is essential. Attention to detail, strong work ethic, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities ensure precise, safe, and efficient completion of concrete projects, meeting both client expectations and regulatory requirements.

What are hourly concrete contractors?

Hourly concrete contractors are skilled tradespeople who are hired to perform concrete work and are paid based on the number of hours they work, rather than a fixed project price. Their responsibilities can include pouring, finishing, repairing, or removing concrete for various construction projects such as driveways, sidewalks, or foundations. Hiring a contractor by the hour can sometimes provide more flexibility and cost control for smaller or unpredictable jobs. These contractors typically bring their own tools and expertise, but materials may be supplied by the client or included in the contractor's arrangement. It's important to clarify the scope of work and hourly rates before starting the project.

What are some common challenges faced by hourly concrete contractors on construction sites?

Hourly concrete contractors often encounter challenges such as adapting to varying weather conditions, which can impact concrete curing and work schedules. They may also need to coordinate closely with other trades on-site to ensure that concrete work aligns with the overall project timeline. Effective communication and time management are crucial, as delays or mistakes during pouring and finishing can lead to costly rework. Contractors must also stay up-to-date with safety protocols and handle physically demanding tasks, making teamwork and attention to detail vital for success.

Baseline Contracting, Inc. is hiring a skilled Senior Concrete Finisher / Craftsman to join our premier Field Operations team. Headquartered in Coplay, we are an established leader in heavy highway and civil concrete construction, delivering high-spec projects for PennDOT, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, local municipalities, and major commercial or industrial clients.

This role is designed for a true master of the trade who takes immense pride in the final product. You will work on signature, high-visibility structural elements—including bridge decks, retaining walls, slipform and fixed-form parapets, and complex site architectural features. If you are a dependable, detail-oriented professional looking for a secure career, steady year-round work, and access to premium prevailing wage contracts, Baseline Contracting offers an environment where your skills are respected and rewarded.

What You Will Be Doing

You will hold responsibility for the final structural aesthetic, texture, and longevity of our concrete placements:

  • Surface Engineering: Expertly finish fresh concrete surfaces to exact grading, slope, and cosmetic specifications using a complete arsenal of manual hand tools and mechanical power trowels.
  • Formwork & Layout Alignment: Lead or assist in setting, aligning, and securing structural fixed forms; direct the pouring, spreading, and rough leveling of raw material.
  • Surgical Treatment: Smooth, edge, groove, and cut precise expansion joints in freshly placed concrete to prevent cracking and guarantee structural longevity under load conditions.
  • Material Preservation: Correctly apply chemical curing compounds, surface sealers, and protective coatings according to strict PennDOT and client engineering standards.
  • Asset Maintenance: Oversee the cleaning, maintenance, and storage of high-end finishing tools, screeds, floats, and power equipment to ensure operational readiness.
  • Safety Stewardship: Enforce a safety-first field culture, strictly adhering to company safety procedures and OSHA regulations across all active work zones.
  • Production Calibration: Partner with your crew to hit aggressive production targets without compromising our signature quality benchmarks.

What You Need to Succeed (Qualifications)

  • Trade Expertise: 2+ years of documented experience in professional structural concrete finishing is highly preferred.
  • Tool Fluency: Elite proficiency with hand trowels, mag floats, bull floats, walking edgers, mechanical power trowels, and vibrating screeds.
  • Material IQ: A deep technical understanding of concrete mix behavior, slump variations, and how shifting weather impacts the optimal timing window for finishing.
  • Physical Stamina: The capacity to perform intensive, physically demanding outdoor labor in all Pennsylvania weather conditions over extended shifts.
  • Logistics Assets: Possess reliable personal transportation to guarantee punctual arrival at assigned regional jobsites.
  • Education: No formal degrees, specific licenses, or trade certifications are required to apply.
  • Market Demand: Highly skilled finish craftsmen capable of completing specialized structural bridge parapets and high-tolerance commercial slabs reside in the top 5th percentile of demand across Eastern Pennsylvania, resulting in long-term career security and stable compensation tracks.

Compensation & Premium Benefits

We reward technical precision and reliable leadership with a robust total rewards package:

  • Top-Tier Earnings: $25.00 – $45.00 per hour strictly based on your field experience and finishing capabilities.
  • Enhanced Income Potential: Access to high-yield Prevailing Wage projects offering significantly elevated hourly compensation rates.
  • Income Reliability: Dependable weekly pay cycle to keep your earnings consistent.
  • Health & Security: Comprehensive Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance structures.
  • Future Security: Corporate Retirement Savings Program to invest in your long-term goals.
  • Work-Life Balance: Generous allocations for Paid Time Off (PTO).
  • Professional Assets: Advanced personal protective equipment (PPE) and high-quality safety gear provided directly by the company.
  • Professional Development: Direct access to paid continuous technical training and recognized trade certifications.
