Job description

UPMC Western Maryland is seeking a full-time Anesthesia Technician to support a fast-paced, team-focused environment across multiple procedural areas, including the Operating Room, Labor & Delivery, GI, Cath Lab, IR, MRI, and additional anesthesia locations. In this role, you'll play a critical part in ensuring safe, efficient anesthesia care by preparing equipment, supporting providers, and assisting with procedures. This position offers varying shifts and includes on-call requirements. Prior anesthesia experience is preferred.
Responsibilities:
  • Prepare, set up, and maintain anesthesia equipment and supplies for surgical and procedural cases across all supported areas. Troubleshoot equipment issues and perform routine maintenance to ensure readiness.
  • Assist anesthesia providers (Anesthesiologists, CRNAs, PAs) with patient care by preparing medications, IVs, invasive line setups, and sterile trays
    for procedures.
  • Support pre-, intra-, and post-operative care by assisting with placement of arterial lines, central venous lines, PA catheters, and difficult airway management.
  • Maintain and restock anesthesia carts, surgical suites, and workrooms according to established par levels to ensure supplies are always available.
  • Transport anesthesia machines, specialty equipment, and supplies to off-site locations and assist with offsite anesthesia cases as needed.
  • Disassemble, clean, decontaminate, and sterilize anesthesia equipment, ensuring compliance with infection control standards; report any issues promptly.
  • Assist with room turnovers between cases to minimize downtime and keep the surgical schedule running efficiently.
  • Operate specialized equipment such as the Blood Cell Saver and perform point-of-care (POC) testing after competency validation.
  • Facilitate communication with anesthesia and OR teams to prioritize daily assignments and remain readily available within procedural areas.
  • Support lab-related needs by delivering specimens and retrieving blood products, maintaining accurate records and documentation of all activities.

Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED and 1 year of anesthesia, emergency/medical or related experience required

  • Graduate from an accredited Anesthesia Tech school or program required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Maryland Certified Nurse Assistant license required. (CNA)
  • ASATT Certified Anesthesia Technician (Cer.A.T.) preferred
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
