Job description

Trellis (https://trellis.law/) is the largest legal research platform for state trial courts, with coverage spanning thousands of courts and millions of cases across the U.S. We aggregate and structure trial court filings, rulings, motions, and outcomes into a unified, searchable platform, combining large-scale data infrastructure with AI-powered analysis to extract, organize, and surface insights across that data. This makes large-scale trial court research possible for the first time.

Our tools enable attorneys to analyze judge tendencies, evaluate opposing counsel, find and assess expert witnesses, and see which arguments and strategies have succeeded in similar cases, so they can assess risk earlier, save time on research, and develop more effective, data-backed case strategies.

We’re revolutionizing the way legal professionals access and use trial court data to make informed decisions. As we scale, we’re looking for a thoughtful and execution-focused Product Designer to help shape the future of our product experience.

About the Role:

Trellis is looking for a Full-Stack Team Lead to help lead the development of high-impact, user-facing products across our platform. This is a highly hands-on role, with roughly 70% of your time focused on building and 30% focused on team leadership, issue triage, and people management.

You’ll work closely with Product and Design to transform large, complex legal datasets into intuitive products, workflows, and analytics that help our customers make better decisions. You’ll own meaningful projects across the back-end and front-end, guide engineers through technical execution, and help create a clear, focused environment for the team by filtering priorities, unblocking work, and developing talent.

This role is ideal for someone who wants to stay close to the code while also mentoring engineers, improving team execution, and helping shape the quality and direction of our product.

Our tech stack includes Python, Django, Postgres, Elasticsearch, Vue, vanilla JavaScript, and AWS

What You'll Do:
  • Lead and contribute directly to full-stack product development, from back-end services and APIs to front-end experiences and templates.

  • Build scalable features using large datasets, turning complex legal information into clear, useful, and customer-facing product experiences.

  • Partner closely with Product and Design to translate requirements into thoughtful, reliable, and well-executed applications.

  • Triage incoming technical issues, bugs, and product requests, helping the team prioritize the right work and stay focused.

  • Manage and support engineers through regular 1:1s, feedback, coaching, career development, and project guidance.

  • Collaborate with back-end, data science and R&D engineers on large-scale data initiatives, system improvements, and product launches.

  • Provide technical leadership across projects, helping define implementation plans, review approaches, and ensure strong engineering standards.

Who You Are:
  • 8+ years of professional full-stack engineering experience, with a strong track record of building and shipping production software.

  • Experience leading engineers through complex projects, whether as a tech lead, engineering manager, or hands-on team lead.

  • Strong Python experience and working knowledge of a Python web framework; Django experience is a plus.

  • Solid understanding of API architecture, front-end JavaScript frameworks, and server-rendered/front-end template development.

  • Ability to translate product and design requirements into clean, scalable, and maintainable applications.

  • Strong judgment when balancing technical quality, product needs, team capacity, and delivery timelines.

  • Comfort managing both technical execution and people leadership responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.

Nice to haves:
  • Experience with AWS, Linux, Celery, Redis, Elasticsearch, or similar infrastructure and data-processing tools.

  • Experience with frontend libraries Vue JS, Vike for SSR, JQuery, and Typescript.

  • Experience working with large-scale datasets, search products, analytics tools, or data-heavy applications.

  • Prior experience in a startup or high-growth SaaS environment.

  • Familiarity with legal tech, public records, court data, or other complex data domains.

  • BS/MS in Computer Science, a related technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

Benefits:
  • Meaningful equity
  • Full Medical, dental, and vision coverage (for you and your family). ALL premiums covered!
  • 401k w/ full match up to state limit
  • Work from anywhere, but be willing to travel for sales meetings, leadership retreats, etc
  • Flexible vacation policy. You manage your own time
Trellis is committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace. If you’re excited about this role but your experience doesn’t align perfectly, we encourage you to apply—you may be the right candidate for this or other opportunities.
