Position Summary:

The OSP Engineer I supports the design and development of FTTH and OSP networks, focusing on basic routing, field validation, and low-to-moderate complexity design tasks. This role assists senior engineers, QA/QC, and drafting teams while learning engineering standards, client requirements, and constructability principles.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop basic OSP/FTTH design packages including routing, preliminary LLDs, splice diagrams, and construction sheets under guidance.
  • Conduct field assessments to validate routing, measure clearances, verify utilities, and identify obstacles.
  • Interpret field notes and convert them into accurate design updates.
  • Perform initial analysis for underground and aerial routes following engineering and client standards.
  • Collaborate with drafters to finalize design sheets and ensure proper documentation.
  • Apply QA/QC feedback and revise work accordingly.
  • Maintain consistent version control and design documentation structure.
  • Identify simple design conflicts and escalate appropriately. Conduct occasional field visits to validate design assumptions, confirm routing paths, and assess real-world conditions.
  • Document field observations through notes, photos, and basic measurements as needed to support design accuracy.
  • Travel to project locations when required to support engineering decisions or resolve design questions.
  • Collaborate with field teams to understand site conditions and ensure designs reflect actual constructability.
  • Participate in field reviews when engineering clarification or onsite verification is necessary.

Skills & Qualifications:

Required

  • Basic understanding of OSP/FTTH engineering concepts and routing principles.
  • Ability to read and create engineering drawings.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Willingness to perform fieldwork in various conditions.
  • Good communication skills and collaborative mindset.
  • Proficiency or willingness to learn engineering software (CAD/GIS platforms).

Preferred

  • Experience in telecom, utilities, fiber construction, or related engineering fields.
  • Familiarity with NESC, RUS, local permitting processes, or utility coordination.


Level Expectations & Work Environment:

  • Works under close supervision with structured guidance.
  • Handles smaller design segments or limited-scope routes.
  • Accuracy expectations align with QA/QC guidance (90–95%).
  • Focused primarily on learning standards, tools, and design processes.
  • Office and field-based role requiring travel to job sites.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and perform field assessments for extended periods.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and in vehicle, with long periods working on a computer.
  • Manual dexterity required to operate a computer keyboard, calculator, and other office equipment
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of files, documents, or office supplies weighing up to 15 pounds.
