Job description

The FSQA Supervisor is responsible for delivering food safety and quality assurance oversight to the plant. These services include but are not limited to; establishing and implementing FSQA department programs and maintaining the measurements to assure finished products meet or exceed company standards, customer standards, and industry standards. Direct, plan, supervise and control all aspects of plant/corporate operations to include coordination of the development, training, implementation, and reporting of Quality into 100% of facility processes; monitor and maintain compliance with USDA regulations and requirements; consistently implement requirements set forth for maintaining the highest standard of quality for products and services.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This list is not intended to be all-inclusive and other duties may be assigned. Designated Backup for: FSQA Technicians and FSQA Manager.
  • Maintain, communicates and trains written policies and procedures. Formulates and recommends new policies or changes to current policies to management. Conducts a continuing review of all GMP's, SQF, FSQA, and Food Safety policies, programs, and practices to keep the company abreast of current practices and informed of new developments. Supports operations in ensuring that training, testing, and new product development is done in compliance with applicable USDA, customer, and company standards.
  • Maintains, updates, and monitors all facets of HACCP, GMP, SQF, & SSOP, with respect to USDA, company, and customer requirements.
  • Responsible for FSQA personnel, direction, follow up, scheduling, evaluations etc.
  • Ensures federal and state compliance with all USDA and company Food Safety and FSQA policies and procedures. Responsible for assigned locations which ensure that mandatory information is maintained pursuant to company policies and procedures. Conduct investigations with support of operations and support departments, to ensure consistency.
  • Develops and performs training programs relating to all areas of HACCP, food safety, and FSQA policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for effective management of FSQA technicians in a Pork Harvesting (kill /cut) facility.
  • Develop, manage, train, and supervise all plant FSQA hourly staff promoting both individual and team success.
  • Responds to questions regarding the understanding, interpretation, and implementation of food safety, FSQA, and R&D policies and procedure.

  • Perform and/or oversee HACCP and GMP audits of the process as well as employee training in these areas in conjunction with the Food Safety Manager.
  • Prioritize supervisory tasks regarding customer focus and USDA concerns.
  • Work with operations to ensure products on hold are released timely.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the work environment, knowledge, skill, and/or ability required or preferred. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree in food science, agriculture, or related in plant experience preferred; Meat processing industry experience is preferred. Must have the ability to complete HACCP Certification within 6 months of accepting position. Minimum of three years' experience in a FSQA/ Food Safety/Sanitation with supervisory experience. Knowledge of laws and regulations relating to: General FSQA Management, USDA, FDA, Food Safety Audits, Labeling, Micro testing, GMP and SSOP programs.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to deliver professional services and demonstrated ability to work well with others.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents in the English language such as safety files and procedure manuals. Must be able to effectively communicate with management personnel and others within and outside of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply basic math, statistics, and algebra concepts.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Basic computer skills and knowledge of standard programs including, but not limited to: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. Must be flexible, adaptable to change, able to work in fast paced environment, ability to meet deadlines, demonstrate ability to manage multiple tasks and projects, exceptional organizational skills, and demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and in team and has sound judgment skills. Ability to work well with others with diverse backgrounds and at various organizational levels.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud with ability to work in a cold environment.
