We are seeking Telecom Network Decommissioning Engineers to support a large-scale telecommunications infrastructure modernization initiative for our client. These engineers will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing the retirement of legacy transport, voice, and optical network infrastructure while ensuring uninterrupted service for active customers.
  • Locations: Seattle, WA, Minneapolis, MN, Denver, CO, Phoenix, AZ
  • 9 Month + Contract
  • Travel expenses paid

This is a multi-site deployment supporting a major carrier network transformation program. We are hiring four (4) engineers per location to support simultaneous decommissioning activities across multiple network facilities. Engineers will work closely with network operations, transport engineering, field services, project management, and implementation teams to safely migrate services and retire legacy infrastructure.
Project Details
  • Large-scale telecom network modernization and decommissioning initiative
  • Multiple project locations nationwide
  • Four (4) Engineers required per location
  • Long-term infrastructure transformation program
  • Opportunity to support carrier-grade transport, optical, voice, and data network migrations
  • Collaborative team environment working alongside engineering, operations, and field services organizations
  • The ideal candidate will possess hands-on experience with telecom network commissioning, transport engineering, network migrations, circuit grooming, and infrastructure lifecycle management.
  • Candidates who have worked with legacy carrier networks, central office environments, transport systems, or large-scale network transformation projects are strongly preferred.

Key Responsibilities
Circuit Migration & Traffic Grooming
  • Analyze and audit legacy transport and telecommunications networks to identify active customer services and dependencies.
  • Develop migration strategies to transition traffic from legacy infrastructure to modern IP, Ethernet, and fiber-optic platforms.
  • Perform traffic grooming activities to ensure service continuity during network retirement initiatives.
  • Validate network readiness and capacity requirements prior to decommissioning activities.
  • Coordinate customer-impact assessments and service migration schedules.
Decommissioning Planning & Execution
  • Develop comprehensive decommissioning plans for transport, optical, voice, and data network assets.
  • Coordinate network shutdown activities across engineering, operations, field services, and project management teams.
  • Identify and mitigate operational risks associated with equipment retirements and network migrations.
  • Support maintenance window execution and post-implementation validation activities.
  • Ensure all retired infrastructure is removed from service without impacting active customers.
Methods of Procedure (MOPs) & Technical Documentation
  • Create detailed Methods of Procedure (MOPs), Capacity Creation Requests (CCRs), and implementation plans.
  • Develop rollback and contingency procedures to minimize customer impact.
  • Produce engineering documentation, network diagrams, migration records, and operational turnover packages.
  • Ensure all decommissioning activities comply with carrier standards, change management processes, and operational policies.
Inventory Management & Asset Recovery
  • Audit network inventory databases and physical infrastructure records to verify equipment locations and service dependencies.
  • Update inventory management systems to maintain accurate asset records.
  • Coordinate hardware recovery, recycling, redeployment, and disposal processes.
  • Support reconciliation efforts between physical infrastructure and inventory databases.
  • Ensure retired assets are accurately tracked through the decommissioning lifecycle.
Site Exit, Power & Space Reclamation
  • Coordinate final equipment shutdowns following successful service migrations.
  • Facilitate rack removals, power disconnects, and infrastructure cleanup activities.
  • Support central office, data center, and network facility consolidation efforts.
  • Identify opportunities to reclaim power, cooling, and floor space for future network expansion initiatives.
  • Assist with site exit planning and facility optimization projects.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or related technical field, or equivalent industry experience.
  • 5+ years of telecommunications, transport, network engineering, or infrastructure operations experience.
  • Experience working within carrier, service provider, telecommunications, or large enterprise network environments.
  • Strong understanding of network migration, transport engineering, circuit lifecycle management, and service provisioning.
  • Experience creating and executing technical implementation plans and MOPs.
  • Ability to analyze network dependencies and assess operational risk.
  • Experience coordinating maintenance windows and network change activities.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with SONET, SDH, TDM, DWDM, OTN, MPLS, Ethernet, IP, or optical transport networks.
  • Experience supporting network modernization, consolidation, migration, or decommissioning programs.
