How much do freelance small business jobs pay per hour?

As of Sep 11, 2026, the average hourly pay for freelance small business in the United States is $47.71, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $24.28 and $61.78 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a freelance small business?

A freelance small business is a business that is owned and operated by an individual or a small team who offer specialized services or products on a contract or project basis, rather than as full-time employees. These businesses typically manage their own schedules, clients, and finances, and may operate in fields such as graphic design, writing, consulting, web development, or marketing. Freelance small businesses offer flexibility and autonomy but also require handling all aspects of the business, including marketing, client relations, and taxes.

What are some common challenges freelance small business owners face when managing clients and projects?

Freelance small business owners often juggle multiple clients and projects at once, which can make time management and prioritization challenging. Setting clear expectations with clients, maintaining consistent communication, and establishing boundaries are crucial for avoiding scope creep and burnout. Additionally, freelancers need to handle administrative tasks such as invoicing, contracts, and marketing, which can be time-consuming but are essential for ensuring professional operations and steady income.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance small business owner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Small Business Owner, you need entrepreneurial skills, basic financial literacy, and expertise in your chosen service or product area, typically supported by relevant experience or education. Familiarity with tools like accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks), project management platforms, and online marketing systems is essential. Strong self-motivation, time management, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for building client relationships and managing workloads. These abilities are vital for sustaining growth, ensuring client satisfaction, and adapting to changing business demands.

What is the difference between Freelance Small Business vs Freelance Entrepreneur?

AspectFreelance Small BusinessFreelance Entrepreneur
CredentialsTypically no formal credentials required, but business licenses may be neededSimilar credentials, often with additional business or industry certifications
Work EnvironmentOperates independently, often from home or rented spaceMay manage multiple projects or ventures, often with a team or partners
Employer & Industry UsageWorks for clients as an independent contractor within various industriesCreates and manages a business, often expanding beyond freelance work
Search & Comparison IntentLooking for freelance work, small business setup, or independent contractingInterested in starting or scaling a business, innovation, or growth strategies

While both roles involve independent work, a Freelance Small Business focuses on providing services as an individual contractor, whereas a Freelance Entrepreneur actively builds and manages a business venture, often with a broader scope and growth ambitions.

About the Role

Zarifa USA is adding a flexible, resourceful teammate to help with everything from content writing and design work to website tweaks, email campaigns, and customer support. This position can be part‐time or full‐time and offers hybrid flexibility. Location details are open to discussion, but some level of on‐site work at our Murray, UT headquarters will be required.

What You’ll Do

AreaTypical Projects You’ll Tackle

Customer Engagement: Respond to emails, calls, and live‐chat tickets; flag recurring issues and update FAQs

Content & Design: Draft SEO‐friendly blog posts; refresh older articles; create social‐media graphics and captions using Photoshop, Canva, and AI tools

Website Support: Update product pages in Shopify, optimize images, test links, and make minor HTML edits

Email Marketing: Build lists, set up campaigns in Klaviyo, write concise promo copy, and pull performance reports

Analytics & SEO: Research keywords with Surfer SEO, track weekly traffic, and suggest quick wins for rankings

Project mix changes week to week—great exposure to the full digital‐marketing toolkit.

Schedule & Work Arrangement

  • Hours: 20–40 hrs/week (we’ll set a consistent schedule together)

  • Location: Hybrid—exact on‐site frequency discussed during hiring; remote work supported the rest of the time

What You’ll Need

  • Your own work setup at home: a computer/laptop capable of handling large files, Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator, and a strong, reliable internet connection

  • Comfort in Adobe Photoshop (Illustrator & Canva helpful)

  • Interest in AI tools for writing and design (e.g., ChatGPT, Firefly)

  • A working grasp of SEO basics and eagerness to learn more

  • Clear communication, solid organization, and a “figure‐it‐out” attitude

Internships, freelance gigs, or coursework in marketing/e‐commerce/design are nice, not mandatory.

Nice‐to‐Have Extras

  • Experience with Shopify, Klaviyo, or Surfer SEO

  • Interest in HSA/FSA‐eligible wellness products

  • Basic HTML/CSS editing skills

Compensation & Perks

  • Competitive hourly pay based on experience

  • Flexible schedule with remote days
