Job description

UX Product Design Strategist RFP
Culture Change Indicators (CCI) Dashboard for the US Farmed Animal Advocacy Movement
The project
We're helping US farmed animal advocacy leaders make better strategic decisions by giving them a shared, data-informed picture of how culture is shifting. Our MVP dashboard tracks 25+ indicators across six domains, currently built in Looker, with a public launch planned for July 2026. The indicators draw on a mix of public polling, market and industry data, media tracking, and original survey research.
You'll work directly with movement leaders to shape how they engage with the data. This is a human-centered design process. The right designer will deeply understand user needs, goals, and context before arriving at a solution. This is a deliverable-based contract engagement, ideal for a freelancer or small studio.
The problem
The dashboard works as a data repository but not yet as an experience. Key tensions:
  • Some users want high-level takeaways, others want to explore data in depth. Both types of users are still having to work for their info.
  • It's not clear whether this should be a dashboard, an infographic, a narrative data experience, or a hybrid.
  • We want to simplify info and "time from entry to insight" while also allowing for people to review the indicators in connection to each other.

We have five rounds of stakeholder feedback and strong engagement from funders and movement leaders. What we lack is someone with the expertise to structure that feedback, test directions with users, and tell us where to go.
What we need (Phase 1)
  • Collaborate with our team to develop 3-5 prototype directions. These will represent distinct approaches (e.g., narrative storytelling, interactive dashboard, static annual report, hybrid). We'll use rapid prototyping tools (including AI-assisted wireframing) to create these together.
  • Conduct user interviews with movement leaders. Test prototype directions with senior nonprofit leaders who are the primary users of this tool.
  • Synthesize findings into a clear strategic recommendation. Define user types and journeys, recommend format and platform, and deliver a UX brief with directional wireframes.
  • Evaluate technical feasibility. Assess the tradeoffs between approaches, including maintenance burden, ease of annual updates, and what level of development each direction requires. Provide clear guidance on what kind of developer or builder would be needed to execute.
  • Present findings and recommendations to the project team, including suggestions for how to move from strategy to execution (developer handoff, platform choice, build approach).

Deliverables must support a July 2026 public launch, which includes time for development after your handoff.
Who you are
Requirements
  • 5+ years in human-centered design, with 3+ on data products or dashboards
  • 2+ years managing your own client engagements (freelance, independent consulting, or equivalent)
  • Experience designing for senior leaders and understanding their decision-making needs
  • Ability to lead the process independently, including defining research questions, structuring user interviews, evaluating prototype directions, and driving toward a clear recommendation

Ideal fit
  • Experience working with nonprofit or mission-driven leaders, especially in farmed animal welfare, plant-based, or related movements
  • Comfort with rapid prototyping tools and concept testing
  • Familiarity with BI/data platforms (Looker, Tableau, or similar)
  • Experience designing for multiple user types within one product
  • Experience collaborating with data engineers on technical feasibility

Compensation
This is a project-based engagement with a fixed fee per phase, paid on milestone completion. We've benchmarked this role at approximately $80-$110/hr for a US-based senior UX strategist. We welcome candidates from any location and will adjust compensation based on regional market rates while maintaining equity across the engagement. Scope and final budget will be defined together during the interview process.
About the Culture Change Indicators (CCI) Project
CCI tracks indicators of culture change related to farmed animals in the US, drawing on public polling, market data, media tracking, and original survey research. The goal is to give movement leaders a shared, evidence-based picture of how culture is shifting so they can make better strategic decisions and coordinate more effectively. The project began in early 2024 with 20+ movement leaders and has been refined through multiple rounds of stakeholder feedback, in partnership with Bryant Research and reviewed by Faunalytics.
About Sharpen Strategy
Sharpen Strategy supports the farmed animal protection movement through organizational consulting, leadership development, strategic planning, and movement-level research. We provide free and subsidized support to organizations, advocates, and funders working to improve the lives of farmed animals. Our team brings deep experience from within the movement, including leadership roles at The Humane League, and years of nonprofit strategy consulting and international development.
