What is a freelance discrete event simulation specialist?

A Freelance Discrete Event Simulation specialist is an independent professional who creates and analyzes computer models that simulate the operation of complex systems over time. These specialists use discrete event simulation techniques to represent events occurring at distinct points, such as arrivals, departures, or breakdowns in systems like manufacturing lines, healthcare processes, or logistics networks. By working freelance, they take on projects for various clients, helping organizations optimize processes, reduce costs, and make informed decisions based on data-driven simulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance discrete event simulation specialist?

To thrive as a Freelance Discrete Event Simulation specialist, you need a solid background in mathematics, systems engineering, and simulation modeling, often supported by a degree in engineering, computer science, or related fields. Proficiency in simulation software such as Arena, Simul8, or AnyLogic, along with knowledge of programming languages like Python or C++, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, client communication, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for managing projects and delivering customized solutions. These skills ensure accurate simulation models, effective client collaboration, and successful project outcomes in diverse industries.

What are some common challenges faced by freelance discrete event simulation professionals, and how can they effectively manage project workflows?

Freelance discrete event simulation professionals often face challenges such as managing multiple projects with differing client requirements, ensuring clear communication despite remote collaboration, and staying updated with evolving simulation tools and methodologies. To effectively manage workflows, it's important to establish clear project milestones, maintain detailed documentation, and utilize version control systems for model files. Building strong client relationships and setting realistic expectations also help ensure smooth project delivery and client satisfaction.

What is the difference between Freelance Discrete Event Simulation vs Data Analyst?

AspectFreelance Discrete Event SimulationData Analyst
Required CredentialsKnowledge of simulation software, basic programming skillsDegree in statistics, mathematics, or related field; proficiency in data tools
Work EnvironmentProject-based, remote or on-site consultingOffice or remote, often within organizations
Industry UsageManufacturing, logistics, healthcare, where process modeling is neededFinance, marketing, healthcare, analyzing data trends

Freelance Discrete Event Simulation specialists focus on modeling and analyzing complex systems through simulation, often working independently on specific projects. Data Analysts interpret data sets to provide insights, typically within organizations. While both roles require analytical skills, discrete event simulation emphasizes process modeling, whereas data analysis centers on data interpretation and reporting.

Job description

Manufacturing Simulation and Systems Engineer - Aerospace Transparencies
Grand Prairie, TX
As the Manufacturing Simulation and Systems Engineer, you will lead the site's discrete-event simulation model and its evolution toward a live digital twin for all manufacturing areas. You will also implement digital manufacturing enhancements connecting the site's QAD ERP platform to reporting and visualization tools to deliver live, floor-ready production data. You will translate raw QAD data into real-time visibility and identify opportunities to optimize how QAD is configured and used across production.
In this role you will report directly to the Operational Excellence Manager, and you will work on-site at our Aerospace Transparencies Production facility in Grand Prairie, TX.
Responsibilities:
  • Lead development of the site's simulation model (ProModel) with eventual expansion to digital twin.
  • Analyze existing manufacturing processes and identify opportunities for improvement using QAD data and Lean Manufacturing/Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Extract, interpret, and present live production data from the site's QAD ERP platform, delivering real-time visibility on the production floor through dashboards and reporting tools.
  • Identify and implement optimization opportunities within QAD to improve data accuracy, workflow efficiency, and reporting capability.
  • Develop data collection structures and dashboards to capture production metrics and provide insight into performance and quality, using whatever tools best fit the need.
  • Provide ongoing support and maintenance for QAD data integrations, dashboards, and simulation models to ensure performance and reliability; troubleshoot and resolve issues, coordinating with IT as needed.
  • Work with production, quality assurance, and IT teams to align data and reporting tools with operational goals. Train and support manufacturing staff on dashboards and reporting tools.
  • Lead projects aimed at implementing new technologies and systems to enhance manufacturing capabilities. Monitor project progress, ensuring completion within budget constraints.
  • Be engaged in Safety; participate in site Safety programs and ensure operational discipline and compliance with both company and regulatory safety standards.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in systems engineering, Software Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in manufacturing systems engineering, with hands-on work in at least two of: discrete-event simulation, ERP data integration/reporting, or industrial controls/automation systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with a discrete-event simulation tool (ProModel, Arena, AnyLogic, Simul8, Tecnomatix, or equivalent) applied to a real production environment.
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma principles, applied rather than certificate-only.
  • Previous experience with the following is also preferred: working with QAD or an equivalent manufacturing ERP platform, including data extraction, reporting, and configuration/optimization; building dashboards or reporting tools at a deployment level (e.g., data modeling, calculated measures, automated refresh); production data pipelines from PLCs, sensors, or manual floor entry; discrete manufacturing experience specifically (vs. continuous process industries); exposure to or interest in digital twin concepts.
  • Only U.S. Citizens, Green Card holders, and political asylees or refugees are eligible to apply.
