The main difference is that a Founding Product Manager leads product development at a startup's inception, often wearing multiple hats and shaping the company's product vision. A Product Manager typically works within established organizations, managing specific products or features with more defined responsibilities.

What unique challenges can a Founding Product Manager expect when building products in an early-stage startup?

As a Founding Product Manager, you’ll often face the challenge of working with limited resources and ambiguous requirements, as early-stage startups typically have evolving priorities and smaller teams. You’ll likely wear multiple hats, closely collaborating with founders, engineers, and designers to define the product vision and quickly iterate on feedback. This environment demands strong adaptability, proactive problem-solving, and a willingness to validate assumptions through rapid experimentation. Being comfortable with change and uncertainty is essential, but these challenges also offer the unique opportunity to shape the company’s product strategy and culture from the ground up.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Founding Product Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Founding Product Manager, you need strong product strategy, market analysis, and cross-functional leadership skills, typically backed by experience in product management or startup environments. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Figma, analytics platforms, and agile methodologies is commonly required. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and entrepreneurial mindset are vital soft skills for this role. These capabilities are crucial for driving early-stage product success, aligning diverse teams, and quickly iterating in dynamic startup settings.

What is a Founding Product Manager?

A Founding Product Manager is an early team member, often one of the first hires, responsible for shaping the product vision and strategy at a startup. They work closely with the founders to define the product roadmap, gather user feedback, and prioritize features to help achieve product-market fit. Unlike traditional product managers, Founding Product Managers often wear multiple hats, contributing to areas like user research, design, and even marketing. Their decisions can significantly influence the trajectory of the company, making this a highly impactful and entrepreneurial role.

What are top 3 skills for a product manager?

A product manager needs strong communication skills to coordinate teams and stakeholders, analytical abilities to interpret data and make informed decisions, and strategic thinking to develop and prioritize product roadmaps. Technical understanding and familiarity with product management tools are also valuable for effective execution. These skills enable product managers to successfully guide product development from conception to launch.

Founding Product Manager

Pay: $150,000.00 - $200,000.00 per year

Job description About The Job

Provn is hiring a Founding Product Manager for a Seattle company building the next generation fan experience platform for professional sports teams. This is the founding PM seat at a company with a live platform and expansion underway.

Hybrid in Seattle

Comp: $150,000-$200,000 base (DOE) + bonus + founding equity. Hybrid in Seattle. Full benefits package including company-funded medical/dental/vision, 401k with company match, flexible PTO, and well-being programs.

Here's the context:

Most professional sports teams run a fragmented technology stack: a website vendor, a ticketing provider, a separate mobile app, a CRM, marketing automation, merchandise platforms, and game-day engagement tools that don't talk to each other. The result is a disconnected fan journey and revenue that never gets captured. This team is building the unified, AI-first platform that fixes that: team website, mobile app, ticketing, fan identity, CRM, marketing automation, merchandise, and in-stadium engagement all from one system. The platform is already live with the Seattle Seawolves of Major League Rugby, with expansion planned across the league and into additional professional sports organizations.

What you'll be doing:
  • Owning platform areas end to end, from customer discovery through launch and adoption
  • Working directly with team executives, marketing leaders, and operators to understand workflows and pain points
  • Spending time with customers on-site during games and events
  • Leading 0-to-1 product development and new feature launches
  • Helping set technical direction and architectural principles, not just writing specs
  • Designing AI-powered fan experiences: personalization, engagement, recommendations, and automation
  • Contributing to sales discussions, customer demos, pricing, and packaging
What we're looking for:
  • 5-10 years of product management or equivalent product-building experience
  • Experience shipping 0-to-1 or early-stage products
  • Comfort operating directly with customers and without detailed instructions
  • Curiosity about AI and eagerness to build it into the product, not just discuss it
  • Ability to work across engineering, design, and business in a fast-moving environment
  • Startup or early-stage company experience is a strong signal
  • Background in marketplaces, consumer platforms, SaaS, or digital media is a plus
  • Passion for sports is helpful, not required

Must be authorized to work in the US. No visa sponsorship.

Comp: $150,000-$200,000 base (DOE) + bonus + founding equity. Hybrid in Seattle. Full benefits package including company-funded medical/dental/vision, 401k with company match, flexible PTO, and well-being programs.
