What is a Founding Product job?

A Founding Product role is an early-stage product leadership position in a startup, often responsible for defining the product vision, building the initial roadmap, and driving execution. This role combines product management, strategy, and cross-functional collaboration with engineering, design, and business teams. Founding Product managers work closely with founders to shape the company’s direction, validate market fit, and scale the product. Given the dynamic nature of startups, they often wear multiple hats, including user research, growth, and operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Founding Product position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Founding Product leader, you need a strong foundation in product management, market analysis, and user-centered design, often supported by prior startup or product launch experience. Proficiency with tools like Jira, Figma, analytics platforms, and agile methodologies is essential for success. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and collaborative leadership stand out as crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure you can drive early-stage product strategy, align cross-functional teams, and adapt quickly to changing startup environments.

What are the primary challenges a Founding Product leader faces in an early-stage startup environment?

Founding Product leaders in startups often face the unique challenge of building product strategy from the ground up while iterating rapidly based on limited data and evolving user feedback. You will frequently wear multiple hats, balancing hands-on execution with roadmap planning and stakeholder alignment. Collaboration is critical, as you’ll work closely with engineering, design, and company founders to prioritize features and pivot direction as needed. The fast-paced, resource-constrained environment demands resilience, creative problem-solving, and an entrepreneurial mindset. While challenging, this role offers a rare opportunity to shape a product’s vision and trajectory from its inception.

Job description

Founding Product Engineer
Department: Technology & Software
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: California
Compensation: $150,000 - $200,000 / year
Description
Location: In-Office (San Francisco, CA) | Open to Remote (United States) Compensation: $150,000 - $200,000 Base + 0.5% - 1.25% Equity Benefits: Best-in-class medical, dental, vision; Unlimited vacation; Personal Executive Assistant support.
This high-growth technology company is building essential financial infrastructure to support and grow America's industrial GDP. We are hiring a founding product engineer to lead core 0-to-1 builds. The successful candidate will own the full-stack product lifecycle: scoping, designing, shipping, and iterating in the field. This role requires travel with the founding team to factory floors in the Midwest and Southeast to meet customers face-to-face and design/build exactly what they require.
Key Responsibilities
  • Own the complete product lifecycle-from identifying customer pain points to UI/UX design, through 0-to-1 full-stack engineering, and final product shipment.
  • Travel to manufacturing customers across the country and work directly with real-world users to validate and iterate on product concepts.
  • Contribute significantly to building a product culture that successfully balances speed, taste, and customer obsession.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • Experienced Builder: Experienced in full-stack product engineering (including Postgres, Next.js, TypeScript, AWS, etc.).
  • Product Acumen: Comfortable scoping from ambiguity and designing UI mockups in tools like Figma.
  • Execution Mindset: Maniacal about shipping fast, scrapping what doesn't work, and iterating without ego.
  • Design Focused: Opinionated about UI/UX details and committed to aesthetic quality.
