What is a Founding Product job?

A Founding Product role is an early-stage product leadership position in a startup, often responsible for defining the product vision, building the initial roadmap, and driving execution. This role combines product management, strategy, and cross-functional collaboration with engineering, design, and business teams. Founding Product managers work closely with founders to shape the company’s direction, validate market fit, and scale the product. Given the dynamic nature of startups, they often wear multiple hats, including user research, growth, and operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Founding Product position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Founding Product leader, you need a strong foundation in product management, market analysis, and user-centered design, often supported by prior startup or product launch experience. Proficiency with tools like Jira, Figma, analytics platforms, and agile methodologies is essential for success. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and collaborative leadership stand out as crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure you can drive early-stage product strategy, align cross-functional teams, and adapt quickly to changing startup environments.

What are the primary challenges a Founding Product leader faces in an early-stage startup environment?

Founding Product leaders in startups often face the unique challenge of building product strategy from the ground up while iterating rapidly based on limited data and evolving user feedback. You will frequently wear multiple hats, balancing hands-on execution with roadmap planning and stakeholder alignment. Collaboration is critical, as you’ll work closely with engineering, design, and company founders to prioritize features and pivot direction as needed. The fast-paced, resource-constrained environment demands resilience, creative problem-solving, and an entrepreneurial mindset. While challenging, this role offers a rare opportunity to shape a product’s vision and trajectory from its inception.

Sandstone

Key responsibilities

  • Collaborate cross-functionally to design, build, and iterate on core product features.

  • Own product work end-to-end by partnering with engineering to define problems, explore solutions, validate concepts, and ship product improvements through launch and iteration.

  • Set standards and establish the design system and processes to ensure a consistent and thoughtful product experience.

Job description

About Us
Sandstone is on a mission to elevate in-house legal from a support function into a true strategic partner. From day one, we've been clear about what we are-and are not. We are not replacing in-house legal teams. We are building a platform that amplifies them.
Our platform enables modern legal teams to move at the speed of AI, deliver better outcomes, and create measurable business value. We unify legal data, power end-to-end workflows, and organize business context within the tools teams already use. Sandstone is the home for AI-native legal departments.
Today, Sandstone is trusted by Fortune 500 companies and fast-growing innovators alike. We ship quickly, iterate relentlessly, and scale with intention.
When you join Sandstone, you become part of a team that believes deeply in the compounding power of collaboration, rigorous problem-solving, and obsessive attention to detail. Our engineering team is elite, our lawyers ship code every day, and we are dedicated to building the most delightful product an in-house lawyer opens in the morning-and closes at the end of the day.
About the Role
We are building a platform that looks and feels like nothing else in LegalTech, and we are looking for a design leader to help us chart the path forward. We believe design should have a strong opinion on the shape of the Sandstone experience, and we have built the product since day one with that at the forefront of our minds.
To be successful in this role, you will be someone who thrives working in an early-stage, green field environment with a high degree of autonomy. You will collaborate closely with Liam Germain (CTO, Co-founder), Jarryd Strydom (COO, Co-founder), and engineers who care deeply about building a novel user experience. You will also help create and distill Sandstone's design culture, standard, and systems.
We are looking for a Founding Product Designer who combines a traditional background in design with a vision for how the world and work of design will evolve in the AI age. "Ship relentlessly" is a core value of our team: we are all builders, and we expect you will be, too.
What You'll Do
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to design, build, and iterate on core product features.
  • Own product work end-to-end: Partner with engineering to define problems, explore solution spaces, validate concepts, and ship product improvements that move key metrics. Stay involved through launch and iteration, not just handoff.
  • As our first dedicated design hire, set the standards, establish our design system and processes that you want to see to ensure a consistent, seamless, and thoughtful product experience.
  • Help us improve how we solicit and incorporate customer feedback directly into the product.
  • Build our design team and culture from the ground up in close collaboration with our co-founders.
What You Bring
  • You bring 6+ years of experience as a Product Designer, or a related role within a high-growth B2B SaaS environment.
  • You have front-end development experience or willingness to code with AI tools.
  • You have a demonstrated track record of entrepreneurship or of success in an unstructured environment - you're hungry, low ego, and generative.
  • You have the empathy to understand what a customer is feeling and the emotional intelligence to know what would feel natural to them.
Working at Sandstone: Benefits & Perks
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance; 401K
  • 12 weeks paid parental leave
  • Flexible time off (20+ days PTO)
  • Annual learning & development stipend
  • Technology stipend, including unlimited spend on AI tooling
  • Daily lunch for in-office team members

At Sandstone, we value high ownership, flexibility, and curiosity. You'll have an outsized impact, work closely with ambitious colleagues, and help transform how legal teams work for the modern age.
