What do food engineers do?

Food engineers develop and improve processes for manufacturing, processing, and packaging food products. They apply principles of engineering, microbiology, and chemistry to ensure food safety, quality, and efficiency, often working with equipment, automation, and quality control systems.

What is food engineering?

Food engineering is a multidisciplinary field that combines principles of engineering, biology, and physical sciences to develop processes and systems for the production, processing, packaging, and distribution of food. Food engineers work to improve food quality, safety, and sustainability by designing equipment, optimizing manufacturing methods, and ensuring regulatory compliance. Their work is essential for mass-producing food products efficiently while maintaining nutritional value and taste.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a food engineer?

To thrive as a Food Engineer, you need a solid background in food science, chemical engineering, and process design, typically supported by a degree in food engineering or a related field. Familiarity with food processing equipment, quality control systems, and regulatory compliance tools—such as HACCP certification and CAD software—is often required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork set top performers apart in this field. These skills and qualifications are essential for developing safe, efficient, and innovative food processing solutions that meet industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced by food engineers when working on product development teams?

Food engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing product innovation with food safety regulations, optimizing production processes for efficiency, and ensuring consistent product quality. Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams—including food scientists, quality assurance, and marketing—requires effective communication to align technical constraints with business goals. Additionally, adapting to rapidly changing consumer preferences and integrating sustainable practices into production can present ongoing challenges in this role.

Job Overview

We’re looking for a Food & Beverage Lead who thrives in both guest-facing and leadership roles. In this hybrid position, you’ll sometimes serve as a restaurant server, delivering warm, memorable service; and at other times step into a lead/supervisory role with a higher base wage to support operations—handling opening/closing, MOD coverage, and ensuring service standards are met across the restaurant, bar, and room service.

You’ll be an essential part of what makes The Source Hotel a standout destination—elevating guest experiences, supporting a world-class culinary and hospitality team, and keeping daily operations running smoothly.

What You’ll Do

  • Guest-Facing (Server) Responsibilities
  • Take and serve guest orders promptly and according to service standards/SOPs.
  • Engage guests with genuine hospitality; answer menu and beverage questions confidently.
  • Operate the POS accurately for orders, payments, and check management.
  • Ensure food and drink quality after serving—verifying appearance, temperature, and portion.
  • Complete opening/closing sidework and maintain clean, well-stocked stations.
  • Collaborate with the team; assist teammates as needed to deliver seamless service.
  • Lead/Supervisory Responsibilities (When Assigned)
  • Shift Leadership: Supervise restaurant, bar, and room service/in-room dining during your shift; maintain standards, pacing, and cleanliness across FOH areas.
  • Service Standards & Guest Recovery: Monitor service cues; jump in to resolve issues, comp/void with authorization, and turn challenges into positive outcomes.
  • Opening/Closing: Execute checklists, secure cash banks, reconcile end-of-day paperwork, submit shift notes/logs, and ensure areas are set for success.
  • MOD Coverage: Serve as Manager-on-Duty as scheduled—coordinate with Front Office, Culinary, Engineering, and Housekeeping; respond to safety incidents and guest escalations; document and communicate via the logbook.
  • Team Support & Training: Lead pre-shift huddles, coach in the moment, onboard new team members, and reinforce SOPs, menu knowledge, and responsible alcohol service.
  • Compliance & Safety: Uphold health, sanitation, and safety standards; conduct temperature logs and opening/closing compliance checks.
  • Inventory & Purchasing Support: Assist with counts, par levels, receiving, and organization of supplies and product.
  • Administrative Support: Assist with scheduling inputs, labor awareness, and workload balancing as directed by the Restaurant Manager.
  • Always-On Operational Responsibilities
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor; model company values and service culture.
  • Communicate clearly with guests and teammates; anticipate needs and remove friction.
  • Help maintain an organized, clean environment—tables, floors, service stations, and back areas.
  • Other duties as assigned to support an exceptional guest and associate experience.

What We’re Looking For

Qualifications & Experience

  • Prior restaurant serving experience required; previous lead/supervisory experience strongly preferred (hotel F&B experience a plus).
  • Strong knowledge of service standards, guest recovery best practices, and responsible alcohol service.
  • Comfortable operating POS systems and handling basic cash/close procedures.
  • Knowledgeable in basic health/safety and employment policy practices; ServSafe/Food Handler and responsible alcohol service certification (or ability to obtain).
  • Meets legal age requirements to serve alcohol in Colorado and complies with all state/local regulations.

Skills & Attributes

  • Self-starter with calm, even disposition in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills.
  • Able to maintain order and control while supporting a warm, elevated hospitality experience.
  • Team-first mindset; willing to pitch in across roles to help the operation.
  • Physical & Schedule Requirements
  • Able to stand and/or walk for prolonged periods.
  • Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 30 lbs (occasionally more with assistance).
  • Flexible availability, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation Structure:

  • Server shifts: Base rate + tips
  • Lead/MOD shifts: Higher base rate + tips

Benefits: Eligibility for medical/dental/vision and 401(k) with match per company policy and classification.

Perks: Crescent-managed property discounts across North America for you and your family.
