Automotive Fleet Mechanic
Role Purpose
The role of Automotive Fleet Mechanic is intended to maintain, diagnose, and repair a diverse fleet of landscaping vehicles and equipment. This role is heavily focused on the automotive fleet, including light- and medium-duty trucks, dump trucks, pickups, trailers, and commercial vehicles powered by both gasoline and diesel engines.
The Automotive Fleet Mechanic plays a critical role in reducing downtime, maximizing fleet reliability, and ensuring our crews have safe, dependable equipment every day. The ideal candidate is a skilled technician with strong diagnostic abilities, a proactive approach to preventative maintenance, and experience working on commercial fleet vehicles.
Key Responsibilities
Fleet Maintenance & Repair
  • Advanced Diagnostics: Perform comprehensive inspections and troubleshooting of gasoline and diesel-powered fleet vehicles using diagnostic tools, testing equipment, and repair manuals.
  • Vehicle Repairs: Diagnose and repair engines, drivetrains, transmissions, brake systems, steering, suspension, electrical systems, HVAC systems, and hydraulic components as required.
  • Diesel & Gas Engine Service: Maintain and repair commercial trucks and fleet vehicles with both diesel and gasoline powertrains.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Perform routine service including oil changes, lubrication, fluid services, filter replacements, DOT inspections, and scheduled maintenance programs.
  • Trailer Maintenance: Inspect, maintain, and repair utility, dump, and equipment trailers, including braking systems, wiring, lights, tires, and bearings.
  • Tire & Wheel Service: Mount, balance, repair, and replace tires while monitoring overall tire condition and fleet safety.
  • Equipment Support: Assist with maintenance and repair of landscaping equipment and light heavy equipment as needed.

Fleet Reliability & Operations
  • Proactive Fleet Management: Identify developing mechanical issues and recommend repairs before failures occur in the field.
  • Emergency Repairs: Respond to breakdowns and urgent repair needs to minimize downtime and support operational demands.
  • Vehicle Readiness: Ensure all fleet assets are properly maintained, inspected, and ready for daily production operations.
  • Seasonal Support: Assist in preparing vehicles and equipment for seasonal demands, including winter weather and snow response operations.

Inventory & Documentation
  • Parts Management: Research, source, and order parts, supplies, and materials needed to complete repairs efficiently.
  • Maintenance Records: Accurately document inspections, repairs, preventative maintenance, labor hours, and parts usage.
  • Inventory Control: Maintain appropriate stock levels of commonly used parts and shop supplies.
  • Shop Organization: Maintain a clean, organized, and professional shop environment with proper tool accountability and equipment care.

Safety & Compliance
  • DOT & Vehicle Compliance: Ensure fleet vehicles meet all applicable federal, state, and company safety standards.
  • Safety Inspections: Conduct routine safety inspections to identify hazards and prevent equipment failures.
  • OSHA Compliance: Follow OSHA regulations and company safety policies at all times.
  • Safe Work Practices: Utilize proper PPE, lockout/tagout procedures, and safe repair practices while performing maintenance activities.

  • 5+ years of automotive or fleet maintenance experience.
  • Strong experience diagnosing and repairing commercial fleet vehicles.
  • Proficiency with gasoline and diesel engine repair and maintenance.
  • Experience with electrical diagnostics, brake systems, steering, suspension, and hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to read service manuals, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, troubleshooting skills, and attention to detail.

Preferred
  • ASE Certifications and/or diesel technician certifications.
  • Experience working on landscaping, construction, or vocational fleet vehicles.
  • CDL (or willingness to obtain).
  • Experience with fleet maintenance software and electronic work order systems.
  • Familiarity with DOT inspections and compliance requirements.

Physical Requirements
  • Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, stoop, crawl, and work in awkward positions for extended periods.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to safely operate shop equipment, lifts, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.
