General Description: The City of Jacksonville Fire Department performs responsible protective service work providing fire suppression and rescue services; does related work as required. Work is performed under immediate supervision. Much of the work is performed under emergency conditions and frequently involves considerable personal hazard.
The salary posted is the full salary range for this position. The starting salary is expected to be in the range of $51,028.84 - $66,337.50 depending on qualifications.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks
Operating, maintaining and servicing firefighting equipment; responding to emergency fire and medical related situations; maintaining station and grounds; continuing training and instruction. (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. - Drives firefighting equipment to emergency scenes; prepares for pumping operations by seeing that hydrant connections are made.
- Pumps water to fire at a designated pressure and sees that suction hose and fire hose are properly located.
- Watches condition of motor and unit during operation and makes necessary adjustments or changes.
- Prepares and maintains required log books, fire reports, state reports, etc.
- Checks equipment daily and inspects pumping equipment, ignition, batteries, brakes and other equipment to see that the apparatus is in safe working condition and notifies supervisor of any defect; cleans equipment after returning from a fire.
- Conducts child safety seat and smoke alarm inspections and installations.
- Participates in station and grounds maintenance activities.
- Performs the duties of a firefighter as required.
- Maintains physical fitness through exercise, jogging, weightlifting, walking, etc.
- Participates in continuing training and instruction program by individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Required Education and Experience
Requirements for Fire Engineer below:
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by successful completion of training courses and 2.5 years of progressive firefighting experience. (1 year as a Firefighter II or equivalent municipal fire service experience).
Special Requirements
- Class B Driver's License valid in NC
- NC Firefighter or IFSAC/Pro Board equivalent
- NC Hazardous Materials Operations or IFSAC/Pro Board equivalent
- NC Emergency Medical Technician or ability to obtain reciprocity from NC Office of Emergency Medical Services (Boarded in Onslow County within 90 days)
- NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800
- Child Passenger Safety Technician (Obtain and maintain within 12 months of hire)
- NC Emergency Vehicle Driver or equivalent
- NC Driver Operator/Pumps or IFSAC/Pro Board equivalent
- NC Driver Operator/Aerials or IFSAC/Pro Board equivalent
- NC Fire Inspector Level 1 or equivalent through NCDOI Comity (Obtain and maintain within 12 months of hire)
- NC Technical Rescuer Common Passenger Vehicle Rescue Series or IFSAC/Pro Board equivalent
- Valid certifications awarded to prior NCOSFM certification standards accepted.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of firefighting apparatus and equipment and their safe use and operation; general knowledge of the location of hydrants and stations in an assigned district; general knowledge of firefighting and rescue principles, methods and techniques; general knowledge of hydraulics and automotive maintenance as applied to emergency rescue activities; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to perform prolonged manual and mechanical work under adverse conditions; mechanical aptitude; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
