Responsibilities
The Underwriting & Policy Services Internship is designed for business-focused college students interested in insurance, risk management, finance, analytics, or operations. The intern will gain hands-on exposure to underwriting and policy services within an excess workers' compensation carrier.
Because this role is structured as a longer-term internship (full-time in the summer and part-time during the school year), responsibilities will be introduced progressively. The focus is on learning core concepts, building technical skills, and developing an underwriting mindset rather than immediate full ownership of all duties.
Over the course of the internship, the student will:
  • Develop a foundational understanding of workers' compensation insurance, including the role of excess insurance.
  • Learn how underwriting and policy services support profitable growth, risk selection, and customer relationships.
  • Gain exposure to how insurance companies evaluate risk, issue policies, and support brokers and clients.
  • Build practical business skills in analysis, communication, and professional collaboration

Key Responsibilities (Progressive Learning)
Responsibilities will scale over time based on the intern's availability, experience, and demonstrated proficiency.
Underwriting & Policy Support
  • Assist underwriting and policy services team members with day-to-day administrative and analytical tasks.
  • Support basic account research and data review under guidance from experienced team members.
  • Learn how policies, endorsements, and binders are prepared and issued.
  • Assist with quality checks, documentation, and workflow support.

Business & Financial Exposure
  • Gain awareness of how underwriting decisions impact profitability and growth.
  • Learn how insurers monitor results, forecasts, and key performance indicators.
  • Support data organization and simple analysis using Excel and internal systems.

Relationship & Service Support
  • Observe and support broker service activities, including responsiveness and submission management.
  • Learn professional communication standards with internal teams and external partners.

Projects & Process Improvement
  • Participate in special projects related to process improvement, data organization, or system testing.
  • Assist with documentation or training materials as appropriate.

Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in business, finance, economics, risk management, analytics, or a related field.
  • Interest in insurance, financial services, or risk-based decision-making.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn complex concepts.
  • Comfortable working with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint (advanced expertise not required).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Reliable, organized, and able to manage time effectively in a part-time academic schedule. Curious, professional, and comfortable asking questions.

What the Intern Will Gain
  • Real-world exposure to a specialty insurance business.
  • Mentorship from experienced underwriting and policy professionals.
  • Practical experience that complements business school coursework.
  • A strong foundation for future roles in insurance, finance, consulting, or analytics.
