Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is a multi-disciplinary arts center located in Brooklyn, New York. For more than 150 years, BAM has been the home for adventurous artists, audiences, and ideas-engaging both global and local communities. With world-renowned programming in theater, dance, music, opera, film, and much more, BAM showcases the work of emerging artists and innovative modern masters.
Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is seeking a Wardrobe Supervisor to lead the Wardrobe department across BAM's campus. The successful candidate for this position will be a strong leader with a high attention to detail. This position requires an exceptional work ethic and significant theatrical experience in wardrobe to support BAM's presented and produced works. This position requires excellent communication to work successfully with other backstage departments, Production staff and visiting companies and designers.
This position's contracted work begins August 2026.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Collaborate with production management and other backstage departments to support artists and companies in presenting cutting-edge, internationally renowned performances and art.
  • Responsible for performing and supervising department operations and maintenance in the Opera House, Harvey Theater and Fishman Theater.
  • Support performances through load in, tech and performances. For larger performances, lead, assign and supervise wardrobe crews performing show-related tasks. For smaller performances, providing hands-on show-related support.
  • Collaborate with BAM and Visiting Company Production Staff with advance planning for shows and events by reviewing and interpreting costume lists, wardrobe run sheets, etc.
  • Identify crewing needs for productions, events and maintenance in conjunction with BAM Production Staff. Evaluate potential crew qualifications and ensure crew members are qualified and match their competencies to position requirements.
  • Work with BAM Production Staff to ensure crew consists of a diverse and equitable workforce
  • Submit accurate and timely payroll to the Production office each week, including correct rates and applicable overtime for all supervisors and dressers
  • Work with BAM's Human Resources department to provide necessary paperwork for new hires and ensure all crew are filling out required and up-to-date paperwork
  • Create all necessary paperwork based on above information including equipment purchases, running lists and expendables for department.

  • 7 years' experience in wardrobe stage work
  • Advanced knowledge of theatrical wardrobe, including costume construction, alterations, repairs, and maintenance.
  • Work will at times require working irregular hours and standing for extended periods of time while lifting and carrying wardrobe throughout backstage.
  • Proficient computer abilities including email and the ability to learn and adapt to new programs
  • Union Affiliation: If not currently a member, the successful candidate will be required to join IATSE Local 764.

Compensation: Salary and Benefits will be provided via the IATSE Local 764 CBA (union) specifications, including:
  • Commitment of 30 contractual weeks of work with additional weeks possible
  • Hourly rate of $51.30 with significant additional OT
  • Welfare, Pension, Annuity Contributions per Local 764 CBA

Working Conditions: Medium Work (Category 4): Work will at times require working irregular hours and standing for extended periods of time while lifting and carrying equipment onstage. It will occasionally require pushing heavy weights or lifting and carrying weights up to 50 pounds with team assistance.
