Job description

At Business Technology, we use Appian to run Appian. Our team builds the internal applications that keep the company moving-streamlining operations, connecting data, and now embedding AI directly into the way we work. We partner with stakeholders across every function, solving problems with speed and creativity while showcasing what's possible on our own platform.

As an Appian Application Engineer, you'll design and deliver enterprise applications on Appian with AI at the core. You'll help automate research, triage, data analysis, and decision support, showing firsthand how Appian's AI capabilities-document processing, natural language search, and generative assistance-can transform business operations.

This role is based at our headquarters in McLean, Virginia. Appian was built on a culture of in-person collaboration, which we believe is a key driver of our mission to be the best. Employees hired for this position are expected to be in the office 5 days a week to foster that culture and ensure we continue to thrive through shared ideas and teamwork. We believe being in the office provides more opportunities to come together and celebrate working with the exceptional people across Appian.

What you'll do

  • Build and deploy web-based applications using Appian's platform and AI features to simplify and automate complex workflows.

  • Integrate systems across the business through web APIs.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to reimagine processes and surface insights through AI-powered search, summarization, and recommendations.

  • Research and implement new tools and patterns that accelerate application development and AI adoption across the enterprise.

  • Support, maintain, and continuously improve business applications in production.

What we're looking for

  • B.S./B.A. in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field

  • 2+ years of hands-on Appian development experience

  • 2+ years of experience with relational databases, SQL, and API integrations (REST, SOAP, JDBC)

Nice to have

  • 3+ years of Appian delivery experience

  • 1+ years building GenAI applications

  • Certifications (e.g., Appian, ScrumMaster, PMP)

  • Experience with Postgres or MariaDB

This is a chance to build applications that impact every corner of Appian-and to learn how AI can be applied at scale inside a leading automation platform.
