Federal Energy Regulatory Associate Attorney (Electric)
Location: Washington, DC
Compensation: $310,000–$425,000

Direct Counsel is seeking a Federal Energy Regulatory Associate (Electric) to join the Washington, DC office of a leading Am Law firm. This opportunity is ideal for an attorney with 4+ years of experience advising energy industry clients on matters before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), including regulatory compliance, litigation, rate matters, and transaction-related regulatory issues.

The ideal candidate has experience practicing before FERC and advising utilities, energy developers, market participants, and investors on complex regulatory issues affecting the electric power industry.

Responsibilities
  • Represent energy companies before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in regulatory proceedings and litigation.
  • Advise clients on compliance with the Federal Power Act and FERC regulations.
  • Prepare and file applications, petitions, tariffs, and other submissions before FERC.
  • Counsel clients on regulatory aspects of mergers, acquisitions, financings, and other transactions involving FERC-jurisdictional assets.
  • Conduct regulatory due diligence for energy and infrastructure transactions.
  • Advise clients on market-based rate authority, cost-of-service ratemaking, transmission and interconnection issues, and organized electricity markets.
  • Assist clients with Section 203 filings and other transaction-related regulatory approvals.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams representing utilities, independent power producers, transmission developers, energy traders, and large commercial energy consumers.
Qualifications
  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school with strong academic credentials.
  • 4+ years of experience in federal energy regulation at a law firm, government agency, or comparable practice.
  • Significant experience in two or more of the following areas:
    • Market-based rate authority and compliance
    • Cost-of-service ratemaking
    • Transmission and interconnection matters
    • Federal Power Act Section 203 filings
    • Regulatory compliance and due diligence
    • Organized wholesale electricity markets
  • Experience practicing before FERC is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with FERC's e-Filing, eTariff, and Market-Based Rate (MBR) systems is highly desirable.
  • Excellent legal writing, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a team environment.
  • Active membership in the District of Columbia Bar or eligibility to waive into the DC Bar.

  • Competitive base salary of $310,000–$425,000, based on experience.
