Description
Liberty Mutual is hiring a Senior Reinsurance Counsel to
serve as a key member of its Reinsurance Legal Team, serving as the primary
lead on assigned complex ceded and assumed reinsurance matters, providing
expert transactional and dispute advice and working closely with actuarial,
finance, and business stakeholders. The Reinsurance Legal team is a
collaborative group of experienced attorneys and legal professionals supporting Liberty's ceded and assumed reinsurance business across the enterprise.
Typical starting salary is $179,000-$209,000
Key Responsibilities:
  • Serve as lead counsel on domestic and non-U.S. reinsurance matters, including drafting, reviewing, analyzing, interpreting, advising on, and negotiating ceded and assumed reinsurance contracts (treaty and facultative), commutations, adverse development covers, contract amendments, and collateral arrangements.
  • Provide reinsurance legal support on transactional matters (e.g., ILS, M&A, and other corporate transactions), including due diligence, deal structuring, documentation review, and negotiation.
  • Assist with and oversee reinsurance disputes, arbitrations, collections, and audits; engage and manage outside counsel where appropriate.
  • Represent and advise the Company on reinsurance components of strategically important legal and business transactions involving complex or novel issues.
  • Perform and direct comprehensive legal research on reinsurance and related accounting, regulatory, and corporate governance issues.
  • Coordinate the Company's position in response to changes in law; represent the Company before legislative, regulatory, and administrative bodies as needed.
  • Provide technical guidance and ad hoc mentorship to junior staff (without formal people-management responsibilities).
  • Maintain current knowledge of legal developments in reinsurance and related areas; perform other duties as required by the practice group.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • J.D. or L.L.B. degree and admission to the bar of at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years' experience as a practicing attorney, with substantial and demonstrable experience in reinsurance transactional matters.
  • Expert knowledge of reinsurance law and demonstrated ability to handle highly complex legal assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent analytical skills, legal writing, and oral communication.
  • Strong client focus and proven ability to interact effectively with internal stakeholders, business leaders, outside counsel, and counterparties.
  • Proven business judgment and ability to provide technical leadership on complex matters; experience mentoring junior attorneys preferred.
  • Familiarity with corporate and insurance business operations and objectives.
