What are Fabric Managers?

Fabric Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the selection, sourcing, quality control, and inventory of fabrics used in the production of garments or textile products. They work closely with design, production, and supply chain teams to ensure that the right fabrics are available to meet design specifications, budgets, and timelines. Fabric Managers also evaluate fabric suppliers, negotiate prices, manage fabric testing, and resolve any quality issues that arise during production. Their role is crucial in maintaining the quality and consistency of finished products while optimizing costs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fabric Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fabric Manager, you need in-depth textile knowledge, fabric sourcing expertise, and a background in fashion or textile-related studies. Familiarity with inventory management systems, textile testing equipment, and supply chain software is typically required. Strong negotiation, organization, and communication skills help build supplier relationships and manage timelines effectively. These skills ensure high-quality fabric selection, cost control, and smooth production processes in the apparel industry.

What is the difference between Fabric Manager vs Textile Supervisor?

AspectFabric ManagerTextile Supervisor
CredentialsRelevant degrees in textiles, management experienceTechnical knowledge of textile processes, supervisory experience
Work EnvironmentOffice and production oversight, supplier coordinationFactory floor, overseeing textile production lines
Industry UsageUsed in manufacturing companies managing fabric supplyCommon in textile mills supervising production staff

The Fabric Manager focuses on overseeing fabric procurement, quality, and supplier relationships, often working across departments. The Textile Supervisor primarily manages daily textile production operations on the factory floor. While both roles require knowledge of textiles, the Fabric Manager emphasizes supply chain and management skills, whereas the Textile Supervisor concentrates on production processes and team supervision.

How does a Fabric Manager typically collaborate with design and production teams during the development of new collections?

A Fabric Manager works closely with both design and production teams to ensure fabric choices align with creative vision and manufacturing requirements. They participate in fabric selection meetings, provide insights on material performance, and advise on sourcing and lead times. Throughout the development process, they facilitate communication between designers and suppliers, manage swatch approvals, and troubleshoot any fabric-related issues that arise to keep the collection on schedule. This collaborative approach helps deliver high-quality products that meet both aesthetic and practical standards.

Job description

This is a hybrid role with three weeks per month onsite (Mon. - Thurs.). The fourth week is fully remote.
This role will lead fabric development for the Lands' End Outfitters (LEO) uniform division, with a strong emphasis on fabric performance, testing, and compliance. The position is responsible for driving materials from concept through bulk production, ensuring all fabrics meet both internal standards and third-party certification requirements (including performance, durability, and regulatory compliance).
This role partners closely with Sourcing, Design, and Quality teams and reports to the Director of Raw Materials. The associate will play a key role in building and managing supplier relationships, while also bringing a more technical, testing-driven approach to fabric development.
A critical part of this role is ensuring that all materials are properly validated through pre-production testing, lab analysis, and third-party certifications, while supporting innovation and continuous improvement across the supply chain.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead end-to-end fabric development from concept through commercialization for the LEO division
  • Own and manage fabric testing protocols, including performance validation, wear testing, and third-party compliance (e.g., OEKO-TEX, CPSC, and other regulatory standards)
  • Partner with internal teams to ensure materials meet quality, durability, and cost targets aligned with customer requirements
  • Collaborate with external labs and suppliers to review test reports, troubleshoot failures, and drive corrective actions
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with strategic fabric mills and testing partners
  • Translate design intent into commercially viable, performance-driven materials
  • Drive innovation in fabric performance, sustainability, and compliance
  • Develop and maintain a materials library aligned with brand and customer needs

Qualifications
  • 5-8 years of experience in global fabric research and development. Experience in apparel retail and B2B, a plus.
  • Strong background in fabric testing, textile science, or material performance, ideally with experience in a testing lab or technical environment
  • Deep understanding of third-party testing standards and certification processes
  • Experience working with global suppliers and external testing labs
  • Ability to interpret lab reports and translate findings into actionable decisions
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration and communication skills
  • Detail-oriented with a proactive, problem-solving mindset
  • Ability to travel 10+ days per year.
