What Does an Executive Do?

An executive is a senior-level manager who helps guide a company’s direction through strategic planning, coordinating with other executives, and directing the activities and operations of their team. Everything an executive does is to help the company reach its goals through improved productivity, efficiency, and profitability. Executives participate in meetings to discuss strategies and policies. Many executives travel frequently. They attend conferences to make business connections, and they visit national and international branches of company offices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Executive, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Executive, you need strategic leadership abilities, business acumen, and typically an advanced degree such as an MBA or relevant industry experience. Familiarity with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, financial management tools, and industry-specific software is common for effective decision-making. These skills are crucial for driving organizational success, navigating complex challenges, and leading high-performing teams toward long-term goals.

What are some common challenges faced by executives when leading cross-functional teams?

Executives often encounter challenges when guiding cross-functional teams, such as aligning diverse priorities, managing communication between departments, and resolving conflicts that arise from different work cultures or objectives. Success requires strong leadership, clear goal-setting, and fostering an environment of collaboration and mutual respect.
