What is an executive project manager?

Executive Project Managers are senior-level professionals who oversee and direct major projects within an organization, ensuring they align with business objectives and are completed on time and within budget. They manage project teams, allocate resources, and communicate with stakeholders at the highest levels, such as executives and board members. Their role often includes strategic planning, risk management, and ensuring that multiple projects support the company’s long-term goals. Executive Project Managers typically have extensive experience in project management and strong leadership skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an executive project manager?

To thrive as an Executive Project Manager, you need expertise in strategic planning, project management methodologies, budgeting, and a relevant degree—often complemented by PMP or similar certifications. Familiarity with project management software (like Microsoft Project or Asana), financial analysis tools, and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems is typically required. Exceptional leadership, negotiation, and stakeholder communication skills help you drive teams and align project goals with organizational strategy. These abilities are crucial for delivering complex projects on time, within budget, and aligned with executive objectives.

How does an executive project manager typically collaborate with senior leadership and cross-functional teams?

Executive Project Managers regularly serve as a bridge between senior leadership and various departments to ensure project objectives align with overall business goals. They facilitate strategic planning sessions, provide high-level project updates, and address concerns from stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle. Effective collaboration involves clear communication, proactive problem-solving, and managing expectations across teams such as finance, operations, and IT. This role often requires balancing competing priorities and negotiating resources to keep projects on track.

Senior Project Manager

Boyd Jones Construction

Urbandale, IA • On-site

Full-time

Re-posted 15 days ago

Job description

Lead the Work. Grow the Team. Shape What Gets Built.
Senior Project Manager
Big projects don’t run themselves- and the best ones run because someone at the center is thinking three moves ahead. If you’re the PM who’s already acting like a PX, who mentors the team without being asked and sees risk before it becomes a problem, Boyd Jones has the next opportunity for you.
We’re hiring a Senior Project Manager to lead complex construction projects out of our Urbandale, IA office, serve as a primary client partner, and help develop the next generation of project leaders at Boyd Jones.
What You’ll Own
This isn’t a coordinator role. You’ll carry full accountability for project performance, client relationships, and team development across large, complex, or concurrent projects.
  • Lead execution strategy, team alignment, and performance across complex or multiple concurrent projects from preconstruction through closeout
  • Serve as the primary client contact — managing executive relationships, navigating challenges, and representing BJC with credibility
  • Own financial performance: forecasting accuracy, risk mitigation, cash flow, and portfolio-level profitability
  • Mentor and develop Project Managers, APMs, and Project Engineers — actively building bench strength on your teams
  • Establish and reinforce risk management, safety culture, and quality standards across all assigned projects
  • Review and approve RFIs, submittals, change events, and documentation prepared by project teams
  • Lead OAC meetings, subcontractor coordination, and internal planning sessions
  • Represent Boyd Jones in client presentations, interviews, and industry events
What’s In It For You
  • Competitive compensation based on your experience.
  • Work that matters. You’ll lead meaningful vertical construction projects with real complexity- the kind of work that builds a résumé and a reputation.
  • A seat at the table. BJC is big enough for complex, diverse work and small enough that your voice is heard.
Who We’re Looking For
You’re analytically sharp and people-smart. You hold a room with a client and turn around and pull the team together in the same day. You’re the one who makes the hard call early instead of waiting for someone else to see it.
  • 8+ years of commercial construction project management experience, including leadership of large or complex projects
  • Proven ability to manage client relationships, lead teams, and mentor emerging talent
  • Strong financial acumen — you’re comfortable owning forecasts, managing risk, and protecting margin
  • Proficiency in Procore, Bluebeam, P6 or equivalent scheduling software, and Microsoft Office
  • Excellent communicator — confident with executives, trade partners, and project teams alike
  • OSHA 30 certified or willing to obtain
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field preferred
Why Boyd Jones
Boyd Jones is a Nebraska-based general contractor with offices in Omaha, Des Moines, and Dallas- big enough to build complex, high-profile work across commercial, vertical, and specialty sectors; small enough that your contributions are seen and your career actually moves.
We’re a values-driven company- Safety, Integrity, Stewardship, Continuous Improvement, and Partnership aren’t wall art here. They show up in how we run projects, how we treat trade partners, and how we develop our people.
If you’re ready to do the best work of your career and help shape what comes next at BJC, we’d like to talk.
Ready to lead the work? Apply today!
