Executive Development information

What is executive development?

Executive development refers to the process of preparing and enhancing the skills, knowledge, and abilities of individuals in leadership positions within an organization. This can involve formal training programs, coaching, mentoring, and on-the-job experiences designed to help executives lead more effectively. The goal is to ensure that leaders are equipped to drive organizational success, adapt to changing business environments, and manage teams efficiently. Executive development is crucial for succession planning and maintaining a competitive edge in the market.

What are some typical challenges faced in an executive development role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Executive Development often encounter challenges such as aligning leadership programs with evolving organizational goals, engaging busy executives in ongoing learning, and measuring the impact of development initiatives. To address these, it’s important to maintain strong communication with senior leaders, tailor programs to specific business needs, and use robust metrics to track outcomes. Collaborating closely with HR, business unit leaders, and external partners can also help ensure initiatives remain relevant and effective.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in executive development, and why are they important?

To excel in Executive Development, you need a strong background in leadership theory, talent management, and organizational behavior, often supported by a degree in business or human resources. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), assessment tools, and certifications such as SHRM or HRCI is highly beneficial. Excellent communication, strategic thinking, and relationship-building skills help drive effective leadership programs and foster executive growth. These capabilities are crucial for shaping future leaders, aligning talent strategies with business goals, and ensuring long-term organizational success.

This is a high-visibility, high-trust role for a fast-moving, newly formed organization. The ideal candidate operates with discretion and independent judgment, anticipates needs before being asked, and can flex between calendar management and cross-team project coordination. Real estate development industry experience is strongly preferred.

This role requires the highest level of confidentiality and discretion. The Executive Assistant will regularly be exposed to sensitive business, financial, personnel, and strategic information — including matters related to land transactions, ownership discussions, and organizational planning — and must handle all such information with absolute discretion, both inside and outside the organization.

Primary Job Duties:

The Executive Assistant to the Rawhide Development President and CEO will have the daily responsibilities including, without limitation, to the following:

  • Executive Support
    • Own and proactively manage a complex, shifting calendar across internal Cardinals leadership, external partners, consultants, and public agencies - resolving conflicts, prioritizing competing requests, and protecting focus time
    • Serve as the primary gatekeeper for the CEO's time and access, applying strong judgment to triage meeting requests and determine what warrants the CEO's direct involvement versus delegation
    • Coordinate domestic travel arrangements, itineraries, and logistics
    • Screen and prioritize communications, especially with Cardinals ownership
    • Prepare, format, and organize materials for meetings, presentations, and board-level updates
    • Handle confidential correspondence, files, and conversations with strict discretion, using sound judgment about what can be shared, with whom, and when
  • Team & Project Coordination
    • Support the broader Rawhide Development team (currently small, growing) with scheduling, logistics, and cross-functional coordination
    • Maintain master tracking lists for action items, deliverables, and deadlines across multiple concurrent workstreams
    • Follow up on open items to ensure accountability and on-time completion
    • Coordinate meeting logistics for internal stakeholders, consultants, contractors, and external partners
    • Organize and maintain files, contracts, and records in SharePoint and OneDrive, using clear folder structures, naming conventions, and permissions so the team can quickly find and safely share what they need
    • Serve as the team's go-to resource for document organization and file governance as Rawhide Development scales, including managing access and version control on shared drives
  • Cross-Organizational Relationship Management
    • Build effective working relationships across Cardinals departments (Legal, Finance, People, Construction, Media Relations) to keep information flowing smoothly
    • Represent the CEO's office professionally in interactions with ownership, executives, consultants, and outside partners
    • Exercise consistent discretion in all interactions, recognizing the sensitivity of Rawhide Development's work and its proximity to ownership
  • Proficient across Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), with strong working knowledge of SharePoint and OneDrive for file organization, document sharing, and collaboration
  • Comfortable learning new project management or collaboration platforms as the team's tools evolve
  • Comfortable using AI tools to support drafting, summarization, scheduling, and research tasks
  • Identify opportunities to streamline processes, tracking systems, and communication workflows as the team scales
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree preferred but not required with equivalent experience
  • Experience: At least seven (7) years of experience as an Executive Assistant supporting C-suite or senior leadership
  • Proven track record of complex calendar management and gatekeeping for a senior executive, including independently resolving scheduling conflicts and prioritizing access.
  • Working proficiency with SharePoint and OneDrive, including folder structure design, permissions, and version control.
  • Experience supporting executives in real estate, development, construction, or a related industry strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated track record of handling confidential and sensitive information with absolute discretion.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, evolving organization.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Comfortable working independently and taking initiative in an entrepreneurial, start-up-like environment.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays; hours may vary depending on business needs.
  • Must successfully complete pre-employment screening, including a background check.

What Success Looks Like

  • The CEO's time and priorities are protected and well-organized.
  • Nothing falls through the cracks — action items, deadlines, and follow-ups are tracked and closed out
  • The Rawhide Development team operates smoothly as it scales, with strong internal coordination
  • Cross-organizational relationships (Cardinals leadership, consultants, partners) are professional and well-managed
  • Sensitive information is consistently and reliably safeguarded
