What does an event technician do?

As an event technician, your primary duties are to provide audio and video support for an event, performance, business conference, or another event that is being recorded or broadcast. You may also work events that just require AV assistance, such as a professor’s lecture. Your responsibilities include discussing the correct set-up needed for an event and setting up all the proper equipment, such as microphones, video recorders, or broadcasting tools. You also program lighting or other visual aids and help troubleshoot and repair problems with AV operations at your job.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an event technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Event Technician, you need a solid understanding of audio-visual systems, lighting, and staging, often supported by technical training or relevant certifications. Familiarity with equipment such as sound consoles, lighting control boards, and video projection systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills for managing live event demands. These skills ensure seamless event execution, minimize technical issues, and enhance the overall attendee experience.

Event Technicians often encounter last-minute technical issues, such as equipment malfunctions or unexpected changes in event requirements. Being adaptable and having a solid troubleshooting process are key to overcoming these challenges. It's important to conduct thorough pre-event checks, maintain clear communication with other event staff, and have backup equipment on hand. Staying calm under pressure and working efficiently as part of a team will help ensure a smooth event experience.
