What does an Ergonomics Intern do?

An Ergonomics Intern assists in evaluating and improving workplace environments to ensure they are safe, comfortable, and efficient for employees. Their responsibilities often include conducting ergonomic assessments, collecting and analyzing data, and recommending changes to reduce injury risks. They may also help implement ergonomic solutions, develop training materials, and support ongoing health and safety initiatives. This role provides hands-on experience in applying ergonomic principles to real-world settings, often under the supervision of experienced professionals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Ergonomics Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Ergonomics Intern, you need a foundational understanding of human factors, workplace safety principles, and basic anatomy, often supported by coursework in ergonomics or occupational health. Familiarity with ergonomic assessment tools, data analysis software (such as Excel or SPSS), and reporting systems is commonly required. Strong observational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help interns identify risks and collaborate with teams to implement solutions. These skills ensure the intern can accurately assess work environments and contribute to safer, more productive workplaces.

What types of projects or tasks can an Ergonomics Intern expect to work on during their internship?

As an Ergonomics Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of hands-on and analytical tasks, such as conducting ergonomic assessments of workstations, assisting with data collection on employee postures, and recommending improvements to enhance comfort and safety. Interns often collaborate closely with safety professionals, engineers, and human resources to develop and implement ergonomic solutions. You'll also likely participate in training sessions, prepare reports, and help with employee education initiatives, gaining practical experience in both field and office settings. These experiences provide a strong foundation for a future career in ergonomics or occupational health.
