What does a Part Time Mechanical Engineering Intern do?

A Part Time Mechanical Engineering Intern assists full-time engineers with various tasks such as designing, testing, and evaluating mechanical systems or components. Interns may help draft technical drawings, perform basic calculations, and contribute to project documentation. They often work on real engineering projects, gaining hands-on experience while learning industry standards, processes, and tools. The position is typically designed to offer practical exposure while accommodating a student’s academic schedule.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Mechanical Engineering Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Mechanical Engineering Intern, you generally need a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles, problem-solving abilities, and enrollment in a relevant engineering degree program. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), basic laboratory tools, and Microsoft Office Suite is typically required. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and teamwork skills help interns stand out and integrate well with engineering teams. These skills ensure interns can effectively contribute to real-world projects, adapt quickly to new challenges, and maximize their learning during the internship.

What is the difference between Part Time Mechanical Engineering Intern vs Part Time Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectPart Time Mechanical Engineering InternPart Time Mechanical Design Engineer
Required CredentialsEnrolled in or recent graduate of mechanical engineering programBachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, often in labs or office environmentsDesign office, engineering teams, CAD workspaces
Employer & Industry UsageInternships offered by manufacturing, automotive, aerospace companiesPart-time roles in product design, manufacturing firms, engineering consultancies

The main difference is that a Part Time Mechanical Engineering Intern is typically a student or recent graduate gaining hands-on experience, while a Part Time Mechanical Design Engineer is a more experienced professional focused on designing mechanical components and systems. Interns usually work under supervision, whereas design engineers take on more responsibility in project execution.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on as a Part Time Mechanical Engineering Intern?

As a Part Time Mechanical Engineering Intern, you will typically assist with a variety of tasks such as creating CAD models, conducting basic analyses, supporting prototype development, and preparing technical documentation. You may also participate in team meetings, collaborate with engineers on design improvements, and help with testing or troubleshooting equipment. • Review the current TSL mechanical architecture, including lidar head, processor, power distribution, chassis elements, cable interfaces, and mounting points.

  • Develop CAD models (SolidWorks, Creo, or NX depending on branch standards) of the TSL assembly as currently configured.

  • Perform integration trades for mounting TSL onto a drone used for flight testing (small UAV or mid size platform).

  • Generate conceptual and detailed 3 D models of mounting brackets, adapters, vibration isolation components, and cable routing accommodations.

  • Evaluate geometric constraints, center of gravity impacts, mechanical loading, and thermal/environmental considerations.

  • Iterate designs based on feedback from the TSL engineering team (mechanical, electrical, AIT, flight test).

  • Produce engineering drawings and configuration-controlled CAD packages suitable for internal design reviews.

  • Documentation: Develop reports, presentations, and other documentation, providing clear comments and guidance

  • Attend meetings, teleconferences, and workshops as needed

  • If schedule permits, the intern may:

    • Support analysis or testing tasks related to Orion flight software components.
