What does a part time mechanical engineering intern do?

A Part Time Mechanical Engineering Intern assists full-time engineers with various tasks such as designing, testing, and evaluating mechanical systems or components. Interns may help draft technical drawings, perform basic calculations, and contribute to project documentation. They often work on real engineering projects, gaining hands-on experience while learning industry standards, processes, and tools. The position is typically designed to offer practical exposure while accommodating a student’s academic schedule.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on as a part time mechanical engineering intern?

As a Part Time Mechanical Engineering Intern, you will typically assist with a variety of tasks such as creating CAD models, conducting basic analyses, supporting prototype development, and preparing technical documentation. You may also participate in team meetings, collaborate with engineers on design improvements, and help with testing or troubleshooting equipment. The specific projects you are assigned will often depend on the company’s current priorities and your skill set, but you'll gain valuable hands-on experience and exposure to the engineering workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time mechanical engineering intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Mechanical Engineering Intern, you generally need a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles, problem-solving abilities, and enrollment in a relevant engineering degree program. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), basic laboratory tools, and Microsoft Office Suite is typically required. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and teamwork skills help interns stand out and integrate well with engineering teams. These skills ensure interns can effectively contribute to real-world projects, adapt quickly to new challenges, and maximize their learning during the internship.

What is the difference between Part Time Mechanical Engineering Intern vs Part Time Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectPart Time Mechanical Engineering InternPart Time Mechanical Design Engineer

Job description

Description
CenCore is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Intern to support mechanical design, component research, manufacturing coordination, and light project support for the Engineering team. This part-time internship is ideal for a current student in the process of completing their education who has CAD coursework or experience, takes initiative, and can contribute with limited day-to-day oversight.
Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with the design of mechanical parts, assemblies, and subsystems.
  • Research components, materials, processes, and relevant physics principles to support design decisions.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing engineers to improve designs for manufacturability.
  • Support smaller portions of larger engineering projects through task tracking, coordination, and light project management.
  • Apply CAD tools to create, review, or modify design concepts and technical documentation.
  • Take initiative to identify questions, propose solutions, and move assigned work forward with minimal direction.
  • Perform other related engineering support duties based on project needs and the intern's skill set.

Requirements
Required Qualifications
  • Current student pursuing education in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field; year in school and specific degree type are flexible.
  • CAD coursework or practical CAD experience.
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assigned tasks with limited oversight.
  • Ability to work 16-20 hours per week, with approximately three-fourths of working hours scheduled between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience using Onshape.
  • Hands-on mechanical experience, such as prototyping, fabrication, repair, assembly, machining, or similar practical work.
  • Interest in mechanical design, manufacturing, product development, or applied engineering.

Skills / Competencies
  • Mechanical aptitude and curiosity.
  • CAD and technical design fundamentals.
  • Research and problem-solving skills.
  • Initiative, accountability, and follow-through.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality work.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with engineering and manufacturing team members.
  • Ability to manage small assignments and shifting priorities in a project-based environment.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements
This is a part-time, hourly internship expected to work approximately 16-20 hours per week. Scheduling is flexible; however, approximately three-fourths of scheduled hours should occur between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Work may involve a combination of office, engineering, design, and manufacturing-support environments. The role may require prolonged periods working at a computer, reviewing technical information, and occasionally interacting with parts, components, or mechanical assemblies.
