What does an ER Per Diem nurse do?

An ER Per Diem nurse is a registered nurse who works in the emergency room on an as-needed basis rather than a fixed schedule. These nurses fill staffing gaps, provide patient care during emergencies, and may work in different shifts depending on hospital needs. Their responsibilities include assessing patients, administering treatments, assisting with procedures, and communicating with doctors and families. Per diem positions offer flexibility and potentially higher hourly pay, but typically do not include full-time benefits.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ER Per Diem nurse?

To thrive as an ER Per Diem Nurse, you need strong clinical assessment abilities, emergency care experience, and a current RN license, often with certifications like ACLS, BLS, and PALS. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), trauma protocols, and rapid-response equipment is critical. Adaptability, resilience, and effective communication enable you to excel in unpredictable, high-pressure situations with diverse teams. These skills ensure timely, effective patient care and seamless integration into various emergency department environments.

What are some of the unique challenges faced by ER Per Diem nurses compared to full-time ER staff?
