As an equipment engineer, you design, inspect, and repair equipment. Depending on your employer and industry, this may include mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic equipment. Your job duties include creating design schematics, maintenance schedules, and reports regarding equipment training, specifications, and best practices. A career as an equipment engineer requires you have some formal qualifications and education, typically at least a bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering. You should have demonstrable skills and familiarity with computer design software, a comprehensive knowledge of safety regulations and ordinances, and strong communications skills. Prior experience in industrial production or fabrication will set you ahead of other candidates.
| Aspect | Equipment Engineer | Maintenance Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Bachelor's in Engineering, certifications like Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP) | Bachelor's in Engineering or Technical Field, certifications like CMRP or similar |
| Work Environment | Design, develop, and optimize equipment; often in manufacturing or industrial settings | Perform repairs, inspections, and preventive maintenance on equipment |
| Employer & Industry | Manufacturing, energy, aerospace industries | Factories, plants, industrial facilities |
