Interface Engineer – Epic Interfaces

Position Summary

The Interface Engineer is responsible for the design, development, implementation, monitoring, and support of healthcare system interfaces, with a primary focus on Epic interfaces using Epic Bridges and Infor Cloverleaf. This role partners with clinical, operational, technical, and vendor teams to ensure secure, reliable, and efficient data exchange between Epic and internal/external systems.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience with interface engine technologies, healthcare messaging standards, troubleshooting production issues, and supporting integrations across clinical and revenue cycle applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, test, implement, and support interfaces between Epic and third-party systems using Epic Bridges and Cloverleaf.
  • Analyze business and technical requirements for new interfaces, interface changes, and system enhancements.
  • Develop and maintain interface specifications, mappings, workflows, and technical documentation.
  • Monitor interface processing, error queues, and message delivery to ensure timely resolution of issues.
  • Troubleshoot interface failures, data discrepancies, formatting issues, and connectivity problems across integrated applications.
  • Coordinate with Epic analysts, application teams, vendors, infrastructure, and operational stakeholders to support interface development and issue resolution.
  • Support healthcare data exchange standards such as HL7 v2.x, FHIR, X12, XML, JSON, and web services/APIs as applicable.
  • Perform unit testing, integration testing, and support end-to-end testing for interface implementations and upgrades.
  • Participate in change management, release planning, and go-live support activities.
  • Maintain high availability and operational stability of production interfaces through proactive monitoring and issue prevention.
  • Ensure interfaces comply with organizational security, privacy, and data governance requirements.
  • Participate in on-call support rotation and provide after-hours support for critical interface incidents, as needed.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement, standardization, automation, and optimization within the interface environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Healthcare Informatics, or related field; equivalent work experience may be considered.
  • 7+ years of experience supporting healthcare interfaces in a hospital or healthcare IT environment.
  • Hands-on experience with Infor Cloverleaf interface engine.
  • Experience working with Epic Bridges and supporting Epic integrations.
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare interoperability standards, including:
    • HL7 v2
    • FHIR
    • X12 (preferred for revenue cycle-related integrations)
    • XML / JSON
    • APIs and web services
  • Experience with interface troubleshooting, message parsing, transformations, routing, and error handling.
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP, SFTP, HTTPS, VPN, and other transport methods used in healthcare integrations.
  • Ability to read and interpret interface specifications, message structures, and technical documentation.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Experience working in a production support environment with incident and change management processes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Epic certification or proficiency in Epic Bridges.
  • Experience supporting integrations with:
    • Lab systems
    • Radiology/PACS
    • Pharmacy systems
    • Revenue cycle systems
    • HIE/public health interfaces
    • Medical devices or ancillary clinical applications
  • Experience with scripting or automation tools to support interface operations.
  • Knowledge of SQL for data validation, troubleshooting, and reporting.
  • Familiarity with healthcare workflows across clinical, financial, and operational domains.
  • Experience in a large integrated delivery network, hospital system, or academic medical center.
  • ITIL or other service management experience is a plus.
