POSITION SUMMARY
The GIS Technician supports the GIS team by executing routine geospatial tasks, maintaining data accuracy, and producing high-quality mapping products. This role focuses on the consistent execution of established workflows, ensuring spatial data is properly maintained, visualized, and shared through mapping tools and web applications. The Technician works under the guidance of senior team members and contributes to the delivery of reliable GIS services across various projects.
ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • DATA MANAGEMENT & CREATION
    • Create and update spatial features (tracts, project footprints, third-party points)
    • Maintain and standardize attribute tables in software ArcGIS Online and the Land Database
    • Perform bulk data edits and cleanup
    • Extract and transform spatial data from PDFs and other documents
    • Ensure proper metadata and naming conventions are applied to all new datasets


  • ANALYSIS & REPORTING
    • Run buffer, intersection, and overlay analyses under guidance
    • Monitor exception reports and flag data quality issues
    • Assist in compiling spatial/tabular data for reports
    • Apply QC checklists and document findings
    • Support ad-hoc spatial queries and simple statistical summaries for project teams


  • MAPPING & VISUALIZATION
    • Produce print maps, map books, and figures using standardized templates
    • Apply consistent symbology, labeling, and layouts
    • Support dashboards and web maps in AGOL and Field Maps
    • Update pop-ups to reflect project changes
    • Perform basic cartographic QA to verify map readability and compliance
  • AUTOMATION & SYSTEMS
    • Execute established FME workbenches and notify senior staff of failures
    • Support basic script development under supervision
    • Manage AGOL/FME Server user accounts, permissions, and licenses
    • Document automation processes and escalate improvements
    • Maintain a log of workflow performance and error trends


  • HEALTH & SAFETY
    • Adhere to and stay informed on all Health & Safety requirementsas outlined in the organization's policies, procedures, and any relevant legislation
    • Follow established safety procedures and protocols
    • Use required controls to protect against potential hazards, including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
    • Identify and report any unsafe conditions, hazards, incidents, or potential risks
    • Promote a culture of safety through active involvement, attending training, and supporting teammates


EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education
    • Diploma or post-secondary certificate in GIS, geography, environmental science, or a related field
  • Experience
    • Entry-level role; experience with GIS software or in a mapping-related role is an asset.
  • Other Requirements
    • Other certificates or designations are an asset


TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Additional travel may be required for seminars, training sessions, or visits to alternate locations. This requirement may change based on business needs.
