Job description

Hourly Rate: 

  • Starting at $33.40 per hour. 
  • Wage increase every 1040 hours, based upon passing evaluation.  
  • Top rate (A-rate Journeyman)  $36.40 plus an additional $1/hour trade premium.

This is a position for a Machinist Apprentice, with the potential to continue employment as a Journeyman Machinist after the apprenticeship is completed.This entry level position will beassigned to one of our three Steel facilities in Stark County, Ohio (Gambrinus, Harrison or Faircrest Steel plants). Employees in this position are responsible for performing a variety of machining and educational tasks including but not limited to on-the-job training and assisting journeymen in the completion of machining and maintenance tasks. Employees in this position are responsible for but not limited to the following

  • Be a motivated team member responsible for miscellaneous machining duties within a world-class manufacturing facility.
  • Receive and interpret instructions and prints regarding varying work assignments.
  • Interpret drawings and sketches, as well as plan and determine working procedure.
  • Perform layout work and make sketches of parts as required.
  • Calculate and determine dimensions, tapers, indices, and other data by using shop formulas and handbooks.
  • Select and grind tools for the job in accordance with hardness, machinability and other properties of parts or materials to be machined.
  • Procure or make jigs, fixtures, or machine attachments, required for the job.
  • Set up, program, and operate machine tools, adjusting stops, feed and speed for efficient machining.
  • Machine parts to precision tolerances and specified finishes.
  • Operate radio-controlled crane to load and unload machines and transport materials.
  • Assist maintenance personnel in making repairs.
  • Check and measure work with gauges, micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring instruments.
  • Dismantle machinery and equipment.
  • Assemble, fit, level, align, and adjust machinery and equipment to very close tolerances.
  • Works in shop or plant as required.
  • Demonstrate the ability to problem solve.
  • Perform miscellaneous work such as lubricate machines and equipment, hook and unhook lifts, fill out in time reports and work tickets, and keep equipment and work area clean and orderly for safe and efficient asset management.

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to frequently lift up to 50 pounds; rarely lifts between 50-75 pounds.
  • Ability to work with machinery with moving parts.
  • Ability to stand frequently.
  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to operate crane, truck, or motor vehicle

Qualified candidates will have:

  • At least a high school diploma/GED. Technical training certificate and/or 1 year experience in machining and running machine tools
