Job description

Relocation will not be offered for this position. 

Purpose & Scope:

This role provides technical leadership and hands-on execution across Metallus operations, supporting maintenance, production, reliability, and continuous improvement teams. The SME Professional is a recognized authority in equipment reliability and maintenance best practices and applies this expertise to improve asset performance, uptime, and operational efficiency.

The SME professional is responsible for directly executing planned maintenance work, supporting and executing the weekly maintenance schedule, being the lead on unplanned maintenance emergency work, and driving improvements through preventive, predictive, and proactive maintenance strategies.

Responsibilities:

  • Safety Performance, Compliance, and Incident Prevention
    • Achieve and sustain safety KPIs by strictly adhering to Metallus safety policies and procedures, actively identifying and mitigating risks, and reinforcing a proactive safety culture that supports and advances the organization's safety vision.
  • Execute Maintenance Work & Weekly Plans
    • Directly execute scheduled maintenance activities in alignment with the weekly maintenance plan.
    • Work within the 7-day maintenance window to address and deliver planned, unplanned, and emergency work.
    • Lead maintenance crews and contractors through execution of the maintenance plan.
    • Assign and manage the workload of trade and craft employees during execution.
    • Ensure safety, quality, and efficiency in all completed work.
    • Identify and communicate plan deviations, scope changes, and improvement opportunities.
    • Adhere to Metallus RMOS Standards.
  • Reliability & Maintenance Leadership
    • Serve as the technical expert in reliability and maintenance practices across assigned assets or processes.
    • Drive the application of best practices to improve equipment uptime, performance, and lifecycle cost.
  • Preventive, Predictive, and Proactive Maintenance
    • Execute and continuously improve maintenance strategies using equipment history, condition monitoring, and failure analysis.
    • Apply predictive tools and insights (e.g., condition-based monitoring, analytics, inspections) to prevent failures.
    • Support root cause problem solving and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
  • Planning & Scheduling Support
    • Collaborate with planning and scheduling functions to develop realistic, optimized maintenance plans.
    • Provide technical input for maintenance windows, outages, and major shutdowns.
  • Contractor Management & Resource Coordination
    • Support the definition of work scope and specifications for external contractors as needed.
    • Ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to quality expectations.
    • Optimize use of internal and external resources.
  • Continuous Improvement
    • Partner with operations, engineering, safety, supply chain, and other stakeholders to improve processes, equipment reliability, and safety performance.
    • Identify and implement opportunities to improve productivity, reduce downtime, and lower maintenance costs.
  • Asset Strategy & Decision Support
    • Provide technical guidance on repair vs. replace decisions based on risk, cost, and performance impact.
    • Support prioritization of maintenance activities to maximize equipment availability and throughput.
  • Standards & Best Practices
    • Leverage industry standards, supplier input, and internal learnings to enhance maintenance practices.
    • Standardize and document procedures to ensure consistency and repeatability.

Technical Skills:

  • Familiarity associated with IBM Maximo CMMS or other comparable CMMS
  • Troubleshooting mechanical/electrical systems
  • Reading mechanical/electrical engineering drawings
  • Project management

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with at least 5 years of experience in manufacturing operations and/or maintenance.
  • Associate's Degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related degree with at least 2 years of experience in manufacturing operations and/or maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with at least 7 years in manufacturing operations and/or maintenance.
  • Associate's Degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related degree with at least 4 years of experience in manufacturing operations and/or maintenance.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related degree with at least 2 years of experience in manufacturing operations and/or maintenance.
