Job description

Job Title: Import Coordinator

Department: Import/Export/Customs Compliance


Position Summary:

This is an entry level customer service position that acts as a bridge between customers, carriers, and US Customs authorities. The Import Coordinator will process shipping documents, ensure compliance with trade regulations, track cargo, and resolve delivery issues to facilitate seamless global supply chains. This position will be based in our Canton, Michigan office and will report directly to the Customs Compliance Director.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Documentation and Compliance: Review, prepare and verify the accuracy of commercial invoices, packing lists, country of origin, and Customs tariff numbers applied so that the shipments meet CBP (Customs and Border Protection) and government agency (ie, FDA, EPA) requirements to ensure a smooth Customs clearance and timely delivery of the goods.
  • Client Communication: Update customers on shipment statuses, relay tracking details, and answer questions regarding duties, taxes, and clearance delays.
  • Issue Resolution: Act as a liaison between freight forwarders, trucking companies, and Customs Brokers to quicky solve logistical bottlenecks and discrepancies.
  • Data Entry: Accurately input declaration information in the Customs entry systems and transmit documents for final approval. Enter billing information and review for accuracy before invoices are sent to the customer.


Qualifications:

  • Organization: Ability to handle multiple shipments and tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment. Must work well in a team environment and follow established processes.
  • Communication: Clear, professional verbal and written communication is essential for dealing with Customs, local customers, international customers, importers, logistics agencies, etc.
  • Computer Literacy: Strong capability with Microsoft Office, especially Excel for data analysis and reporting.
  • Attention to Detail: Precision is critical since even minor errors in classifications or valuation can cause heavy fines or cargo holds.
  • A degree or certification in Supply Chain Management or 2 years’ experience in the Import / Export / Customs Compliance field is preferred
  • Knowledge of Foreign Trade Zone regulations is a plus
