Job description

Patient interview moderator

IQVIA is The Human Data Science Company, focused on using data and science to help healthcare clients find better solutions for their patients. IQVIA offers a broad range of solutions that harness advances in healthcare information, technology, analytics, and human ingenuity to drive healthcare forward.

The Patient Centered Solutions team(PCS)

The PCS team leads the industry in the science of measuring the patient experience. We pair strategic consulting expertise with technical scientific knowledge to design and execute scientifically rigorous research that incorporates the patient voice into the development and commercialization of new medicines. This research includes qualitative (e.g., patient interviews, focus groups), quantitative (e.g., clinical outcome assessments (COAs)/patient-reported outcomes (PROs), preference research) and passive (e.g., digital health technology tools) approaches to understand patient, caregiver and physician experiences and expectations of disease and treatment.

The Role

This is a flexible, part-time role supporting patient-centred qualitative research projects. The Interview Moderator will conduct one-to-one English language interviews with patients, and occasionally healthcare professionals, scheduled according to participant availability across a range of geographies and time zones. As such, the role requires a high degree of flexibility in working hours, including occasional early morning or evening interviews. The successful candidate will play a critical role in capturing the authentic voice of patients, working empathetically and professionally to facilitate meaningful discussions around their experiences, symptoms, and treatment journeys. This role is ideally suited to an experienced qualitative researcher who thrives in dynamic, project-based environments and can adapt their approach to meet both patient needs and study objectives.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Moderate in-depth, one-to-one patient interviews, primarily with individuals living with acute and chronic health conditions
  • Conduct interviews using semi-structured and flexible discussion guides, adapting in real time to explore emerging insights and patient narratives
  • Lead qualitative interviews across methodologies, including:
    • Concept elicitation (understanding symptom and impact experience)
    • Cognitive debriefing of patient reported outcome (PRO) questionnaires
    • Meaningful change / exit interviews
    • Patient experience and preference research
  • Establish strong rapport with patients, creating a safe, empathetic environment to discuss potentially sensitive health experiences
  • Apply advanced probing and active listening techniques to explore perceptions, language, and underlying meaning behind patient responses
  • Ensure interviews capture accurate understanding of questionnaire items, including comprehension, relevance, and interpretation (e.g., in cognitive debriefing)
  • Navigate interviews with a balance of structured inquiry and flexible exploration, ensuring both protocol adherence and depth of insight
  • Observe and interpret verbal and non-verbal cues to identify confusion, emotional responses, or unmet needs
  • Manage sensitive or complex discussions with professionalism, neutrality, and ethical awareness
  • Accurately document, record, and summarise interview outputs, ensuring high-quality data for analysis and reporting
  • Collaborate with research teams on:
    • Development and refinement of interview guides
    • Identification of emerging themes and insight gaps
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory, ethical, and data privacy requirements (e.g., informed consent, GDPR)
  • Contribute to delivery of high-quality, patient-centred evidence to support clinical, regulatory, and commercial decision-making

Essential experience, skills and education required

  • Demonstrated experience conducting qualitative patient interviews, ideally within healthcare, life sciences, or clinical research
  • Proven expertise moderating one-to-one in-depth interviews (IDIs) with patients or healthcare stakeholders
  • Experience working with semi-structured discussion guides and adapting interview flow dynamically
  • Prior experience in one or more of the following preferred:
    • Cognitive debriefing / linguistic validation of PROs or COAs
    • Concept elicitation or patient experience research
    • Outcomes research, Patient-Focused Drug Development (PFDD), or similar
  • Strong understanding of qualitative research methodologies and principles
  • Knowledge of clinical terminology and ability to quickly build disease-area familiarity
  • Demonstrated ability to build rapport with patients and handle sensitive topics with empathy
  • Excellent probing, facilitation, and active listening skills
  • Ability to remain neutral, non-judgmental, and unbiased during interviews
  • Strong organisational skills, with ability to manage multiple interviews and projects concurrently
  • High-quality verbal and written communication skills, including summarising complex patient narratives into clear insights
  • Experience working in remote interview environments (video/telephone platforms)
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field (e.g., psychology, health sciences, sociology, anthropology, public health)
