Job Title: Project Engineer / Assistant Project Manager, Commercial Construction

Location: St. Petersburg, FL
Work Setting: In office and active job sites as needed
Employment Type: Full-time, direct hire
Salary Range: $70,000 to $90,000 base salary

Quick Summary:
We are seeking a Project Engineer / Assistant Project Manager with commercial construction experience and the ability to support project management, field coordination, documentation, scheduling, and subcontractor communication. This role is best suited for someone who has moved beyond a purely entry-level project engineering role and is ready to take on more responsibility supporting commercial construction projects from start to finish.

Position Overview:
A growing commercial general contractor is seeking a motivated Project Engineer / Assistant Project Manager to support the technical, administrative, and coordination aspects of commercial construction projects. This person will work closely with project managers, senior project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, suppliers, and design teams to help keep projects organized and moving forward.

The ideal candidate has hands-on exposure to commercial construction documentation, understands RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, change orders, drawings, specs, and project tracking, and is comfortable communicating between office and field teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, change orders, and other project documentation.
  • Maintain project logs, tracking documents, meeting notes, and project files.
  • Support communication between project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, suppliers, and design teams.
  • Review construction drawings, specifications, scopes of work, and project requirements.
  • Help track materials, procurement, deliveries, and documentation needed to support project schedules.
  • Monitor project schedules and assist with coordination of trades and subcontractors.
  • Support quality control, punch list tracking, and project closeout documentation.
  • Participate in project meetings and assist with meeting minutes, follow-up items, and documentation updates.
  • Assist with issue tracking, field coordination, and communication between office and job site teams.
  • Support project managers and senior project managers with administrative and coordination tasks throughout the project lifecycle.

Required Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of commercial construction, project engineering, assistant project management, or related construction management experience.
  • Experience with a commercial general contractor is strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of construction documentation, including RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, change orders, drawings, specs, and project logs.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering drawings.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and follow-up skills.
  • Ability to coordinate with project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, suppliers, and design teams.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with construction software such as Procore, ProjectSight, PlanGrid, or Bluebeam is a plus.
  • Familiarity with scheduling tools such as Microsoft Project or Primavera is a plus.
  • OSHA 10 certification is preferred.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or a related field is preferred.
  • Equivalent experience may be considered for candidates with strong commercial construction exposure.
  • Additional Requirements:
  • Ability to walk active job sites, climb ladders, and work in active construction environments.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to commute to the St. Petersburg, FL area.
  • Stable work history and strong professional references preferred.
