Job description

I. Summary

The product development engineer is responsible for technical competency and support of all products and product lines including alloy cored wire (ACW), hot extruded wire (HEW), continuous cast rod (CCR), and rolling, drawing, and abrading (RDA). This includes technology for formulations and extrusion parameters as well as forming, fabricating, and packaging all product lines. This position will lead and support process and product improvements through data driven analysis from laboratory and production data. Lastly, this position is responsible for supporting the research and development of new materials, products, and processes.

III. Essential Duties, Responsibilities, & Authorities

  • Develop and apply technical understanding of iron, nickel, and cobalt superalloy solid rod/wire and cored wire processing and metallurgy, including casting, extrusion, cold working, annealing, and welding.
  • Identify, implement, monitor, and support process improvement and new product/process initiatives.
  • Analyze production data and experimental results and make recommendations based on analysis.
  • Work on and lead trials to develop or improve existing materials, products, and processes both independently and collaboratively.
  • Clearly document, summarize, and report results for internal process development and internal/external reports.
  • Perform physical and metallurgical property analysis on welding and metallurgical lab samples addressing product issues, changes, or new product development.
  • Provide support for chemical, hardness, and microstructure analysis for production material.
  • Specify extrusion parameters for HEW products.
  • Establish and maintain ACW product formulations.
  • Establish, update, and maintain part numbers and bills of materials for all product lines.
  • Work in cross-functional teams, interacting with Polymet personnel, outside vendors, and/or customers, collaborating on and completing prioritized tasks and initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain internal product and raw material specifications and procedures.
  • Maintain Specification Reference Database for all items.
  • Understand and follow all Polymet Quality Management System (QMS) documents.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


IIII. Qualifications and Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualifications and requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability necessary to do so.


Minimum:

  • B.S. Degree in Engineering (Material Science, Metallurgy, or Welding) from an accredited four-year university.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.
  • Ability to communicate and work with all levels within the organization.
  • Adaptable to a fast-paced manufacturing environment and ability to switch between product lines quickly and effectively.
  • Strong organizational skills and impeccable attention to detail.
  • Ability to lead and organize engineering projects both independently and collaboratively.
  • Demonstrate a curiosity and willingness to learn through engagement with plant personnel and staff.
  • Ability to acquire data, analyze, and report on findings independently and ability to present these findings in an informative, clear, and concise manner.
  • Ability to travel both nationally and internationally for on average 5% of the year.
  • Fully Executed Confidentiality Agreement and Restrictive Covenants.


Preferred:

  • 1-2 yearsโ€™ experience or coursework in ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy
  • Preferably with superalloys and/or welding
  • 1-2 yearsโ€™ experience or coursework in welding and welding procedures.


Work Environment

This is a fully on-site position. Please note that relocation assistance is not provided, and candidates must be able to commute or relocate at their own expense.


The Product Development Engineer will be working in a typical office environment, with minimal exposure to excessive noise or adverse conditions with some time expected spent in an open warehouse environment with exposure to various weather and temperature conditions.
