A Metallurgy Intern assists professional metallurgists and engineers in analyzing and testing metals and alloys to determine their properties and suitability for various applications. Typical tasks include preparing and conducting laboratory experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and documenting results. The internship provides hands-on experience with metallurgical equipment, exposure to quality control processes, and insight into the development of new materials. Metallurgy interns often work in industries such as manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, or research institutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Metallurgy Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Metallurgy Intern, you need foundational knowledge in materials science or engineering, usually gained through relevant coursework or a related degree program. Familiarity with laboratory testing equipment, metallographic analysis tools, and data analysis software such as MATLAB or Excel is often required. Our commitment extends to providing a safe work environment, supporting environmental stewardship and generating value for all stakeholders. You will be joining us at a pivotal moment in Minnesota's mining history: Mesabi Metallics' cutting-edge iron ore mining and pelletization project is currently under construction. Once completed, it will mark the first new mine and pellet plant in Minnesota in nearly 50 years.
More importantly, you'll be immersed in a positive, supportive work environment that values your contributions and fosters your professional growth. Position Summary
Mesabi Metallics is seeking a proactive and highly organized HR Intern to work directly with the General Manager - Strategic Human Resources at our Nashwauk, Minnesota site. This is a unique opportunity to sit at the intersection of HR operations and strategic people initiatives at a company building Minnesota's next great mine.
The intern will take full ownership of the day-to-day HR operational workload, enabling GM to focus on high-impact strategic priorities. This means running the HR function's operational backbone: from managing documents and employee files to coordinating communications and preparing materials for leadership. Beyond operations, the intern will actively collaborate with specialists across every HR domain i.e. Talent Acquisition, Total Rewards, HR Business Partnering, etc - gaining broad, cross-functional exposure to the full HR function.
This role suits someone who takes pride in keeping things running smoothly, handles sensitive information with discretion, and is hungry to understand the "why" behind every HR process they touch.
Job Responsibilities
Reporting to the General Manager - Strategic Human Resources, the HR Intern will be responsible for the following:

  • Manage and maintain physical and digital employee files, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with records retention requirements
  • Handle day-to-day HR document processing - printing, scanning, filing, distributing, and tracking correspondence and reports

  • Coordinate logistical aspects of HR processes such as onboarding documentation, benefits enrollment packets, and policy acknowledgments
  • Track and follow up on pending HR actions (approvals, signatures, submissions) on behalf of the GM - Strategic HR
Coordination & Communications
  • Prepare and format HR communications, memos, presentations, and reports for internal stakeholders and leadership
  • Coordinate scheduling, meeting logistics, and follow-up actions for HR-related meetings, interviews, and training sessions
  • Serve as the first point of contact for routine employee HR inquiries, triaging and resolving where possible, and escalating appropriately
  • Support new hire orientation logistics - materials preparation, room/virtual setup, and post-orientation feedback tracking
Strategic HR Support
  • Assist the GM - Strategic HR in research, benchmarking, and drafting materials for workforce planning, talent strategy, and organizational design projects
  • Support the development and rollout of HR policies, programs, and initiatives - from concept through execution
  • Help prepare data summaries, dashboards, and presentations that translate HR metrics into actionable insights for leadership
  • Participate in strategic HR projects including employee engagement surveys, succession planning support, and culture initiatives
  • Contribute to building and documenting HR processes and standard operating procedures as the organization scales
Compliance & Audit Support
  • Assist with HR compliance activities including I-9 verification, mandatory training tracking, and labor law posting requirements
  • Support internal HR audits by organizing records, preparing documentation, and identifying gaps
  • Other duties as assigned
Skills & Qualifications
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail - you notice what others miss
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and tasks simultaneously without dropping the ball
  • High degree of discretion and professionalism when handling confidential employee information
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-starter who takes initiative and follows through without needing to be reminded
  • Experience with HRIS platforms is a plus
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
Education
  • Currently pursuing a BS or MS in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, Organizational Psychology, or a related discipline from an accredited university
