Job description

Position: Product Development Engineer

Location: Valley Green (Etters), PA

POSITION SUMMARY:

As a Product Development Engineer, the candidate will be one of the mechanical designers for our next generation high speed connector products. This engineer will work within a larger team under the direction of a Senior Engineer. The role is responsible for helping to ensure the product roadmap aligns with the industry needs (current and future) and maintaining Amphenol's status as the industry leader in technology. The role requires significant interaction with internal manufacturing sites, external vendors, and all of the other engineering disciplines within the organization.

Product Development Engineering is not only responsible for the mechanical design of the product, but also for the enabling technologies (materials, manufacturing processes, etc.) that enable the final product to be realized. The responsibilities cover everything from true R&D work, to securing patents (IP), to preparing a final product for high volume manufacturing and maximum profitability.

High speed backplane interconnects enable the world's IT and Datacom, require some of the most advanced manufacturing technologies, and highest levels of precision, in the engineering world. These challenges require the most creative, technical minds, and ultimately provide some of the most rewarding experiences for an engineer.

The right candidate should be motivated by technical challenges, know how to be a truly collaborative member of a team, and be willing to wear a number of hats throughout the many phases of a project. This role also provides the opportunity for potential growth into various leadership roles, as well exposure to many other aspects of the business and any accompanying opportunities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Understandthe evolving industry needs, and resultant requirements of our products
  • Work directly with Signal Integrity (EE) team to ensure the mechanical design supports the electrical performance requirements of the product
  • Workdirectly with Mechanical Integrity team to ensure the mechanical design provides for a high reliability (quality) over the life of the product, including meeting all applicable industry, and internal, specifications
  • Work directly with the NPI and Machine Design (automation) teams to ensure the product design can be built in high volume, efficiently, and with the highest of quality
  • Conductand understandtolerance loop analyses
  • Responsible for aiding material selection (metal, plastic, surface coatings, etc.)
  • Helpto develop initial product specifications and technical documentation
  • Interfacedirectly with customers during multiple phases of a project, and aidin the sales process
  • Workdirectly with internal and external suppliers for DFM, prototyping exercises, and production tooling design and qualifications; including the occasional travel to manufacturing and assembly sites around the world
  • Provide technical assistance to product marketing and sales teams
  • Participate in quality investigations and quality improvement initiatives in support of operational excellence
  • Participate in fixture/tooling design and in creating and managing test plans (both mechanical and electrical)
  • Active participation in cost reduction projects (alternative material discovery, manufacturing efficiency improvements, etc.)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS/MS Mechanical Engineering (or similar engineering discipline)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with solid modeling/CAE/CAD tools (Pro/E, Solidworks, etc.)
  • Proficiency with MS Office suite
  • Understanding of GD&T, experience with FEA tools
  • Knowledge of copper alloys and high-performance engineering plastics, knowledge of networking/datacenter/server system architectures
  • Knowledge of manufacturing technologies is a plus (stamping, molding, plating)
  • Basic understanding of electrical engineering
  • Ability to travel ~10% domestic and international
